Sony Memory Stick, launched by Sony in October 1998 is a removable flash memory card format. It is a portable device used for storing and transferring data. It can be fitted into and removed easily from any electronic device such as mobile phone, Personal Computer etc. Today, Sony digital compact cameras use Memory Sticks for storing image files. It is also extensively used by techno-freak for whom their mobile phone is not simply a device of communication, but also a camera, music and movie player.

The benefit of Sony memory stick is that with the help of a reader, i.e. a small box that connects via USB or some other serial connection, a user can copy the pictures taken with the Sony digital camera off to his or her computer very easily. In the same manner, Sony uses and has made use of Memory Sticks in digital cameras, digital music players, PDAs, cellular phones, the PlayStation Portable (PSP), and in other devices. This is also included in the Sony VAIO line of personal computers long ago.

Sony memory stick is different from other such products in the sense that it is one of the highly trusted brands available in the market. Apart from copying image files from digital cameras, this device allows a user to copy any type of files both to and from the stick. Besides that, there are also readers that use PC card, CompactFlash, 3.5" floppy drive, and other formats that take its functionality even further.

So far compatibility is concerned; older Memory Sticks can be used in newer MS drives. Likewise, Memory Stick Duo with an adapter can be used in newer drives as well. But it must be mentioned that Memory Stick PRO and Memory Stick PRO Duo are usually not supported in older drives. Moreover, while high-speed PRO or PRO Duo cards will work in PRO drives, it is possible that their usual higher speed may not be available.
