Cosmetics are recalled when they cause short term and long term skin irritation or other signs of illness. The Food and Drug Administration advised customers all over the nation to desist from using face paints that have been reported to be contaminated with mold and yeast growth. Rashes were not the only problem reported with the use of the paints, however. Burning and swelling were also symptoms that caused pain and irritation to many of the victims.

The defective face paints were first discovered when a group of Girl Scouts attended a function where face painting was a popular activity in which they could participate. Many of the girls did, in fact, get their faces painted, many of which experienced redness, burning, and swelling on their faces soon after. A local school nurse in the area noticed that there were many girls that had the same rash-like symptoms on their faces and eventually discovered the link connecting these students—the Girl Scouts function. Many of these girls reported that the rash lasted up to and even longer than two weeks. Some stated that after a few days, the rash and its accompanying symptoms disappeared, only to return when the girls went outside into the sun.

As this has happened so recently, it has not yet been determined whether or not the parents of these girls will file a product liability claim with personal injury attorneys.
