One of the most important aspects of shedding extra pounds is through controlling the types of food you eat. A few simple changes here will work wonders. For example, instead of eating the over refined white breads, choose wholemeal instead. They also contain complex carbohydrates which will make you feel fuller for longer. The same goes for white rice and pasta, the brown versions are much better for you.

Another area of your diet to look at is snacking. If you regularly snack on high fat food like potato chips, chocolate, pastries etc you are going to struggle to lose weight. Try and have some fruit handy to snack on, not only is it low fat but very nutritious too.

It's not only what you eat that can affect your waistline, but what you drink too. Sugary fizzy drinks usually have virtually no nutritional value. Understand your portion sizes. Many of us don't really know what is meant when a recipe says "1 portion of pasta", or "a portion of meat." With this in mind, it is easy to see how many of us eat food portions that are larger than we think. So, 1 portion of meat should be 100 grams (and about the size of a deck of cards. A single portion of rice or pasta is about a cupful, and a medium potato is about the size of your computer mouse.

Exercise! Well, it had to come eventually. The best type of exercise for any kind of weight loss is cardiovascular exercise. This is any routine that you can keep up for 30 minutes or more, that gets your whole body moving. Good examples are jogging, swimming, cycling, aerobics and squash. The important thing is to maintain the exercise for 30 minutes and do this for 5 days a week, giving your body 2 days to rest and recover.

While cardio exercises will help you lose the excess fat, there are other exercises that will help tone the muscle around the waist, such as sit ups, crunches and twists. It must be stressed though that you need to take steps to lose the fat that is covering your abdominal muscles, otherwise you will have toned abs hidden underneath layers of fat!
