Abs Training

Proper abs training involves three fundamental principles. Air blocking is the first principle. The abdominal muscles cannot fully contract with air retained in the lungs. This therefore means that those who hold their breath when for example performing crunches never really attain a full muscle contraction. To overcome this problem, you need to exhale upon exertion through every repetition. You should also remember that once the air in your lungs is gone, the abdominal muscles are fully contracted.

Recovery is the second principle. Unlike other muscles in the body that may take a few minutes to fully recover after a workout, the abdominal muscles normally recover within a few seconds. Because their recovery is so short, they usually respond better to continuous movements .The abdominal routine should therefore involve continuous sets of exercises until you feel completely exhausted.

If you work the abdominal muscles for five minutes and after which you take a break, you are taking too much rest. You should instead try to continually move from one exercise to the next without taking more than a few seconds of rest between every set of exercise.

The third principle in abs training is to always work the lower abdominal region first. You can for example start by an exercise like reverse crunches or leg lifts. This is important because the moment that you tighten the lower abdominals, all the abdominal muscles immediately tighten and stabilize the rest of the body in preparation to execute the movement. As you concentrate in the lower abdominal region, you are secondarily working both the upper abdominal and the obliques.
