Many people have anxiety and worry during the holidays. I think it's almost normal considering that all of us to one degree or another bring heightened expectations to any holiday season. We hope that somehow, this ***** fill in the holiday of your choice season will meet our expectations and everything will be wonderful.
Problem is, our memories of any "great and wonderful" holiday have been whitewashed by the passage of time. The past holiday which we use to develop unattainable expectations for the current season were not that wonderful when we first lived it. We end up being somewhat disappointed, but hopeful at the next holiday will be wonderful.
People with anxiety disorders however, can live day to day in that constant state of worry. Though not specific to any holiday, anxiety and panic disorder symptoms can be caused by almost anything on any day.
Imagine being constantly concerned and worried about basic functions of life. Things like, if the mail and will go out on time, having to attend to errands or going to the doctor for a routine medical test results in an inordinate amount of stress and worry. This is the life of many people who suffer with anxiety.
The term anxiety disorder is actually a general term that is used to identify many types of mental illness.
Things like
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. A good example of this is someone who needs to check if doors and windows are locked in their home. In this example, the person suffering from OCD is likely to check their windows and doors several times during the day and may even get up at night just to verify everything is secure.
Societal disorder. People suffering from social disorders have a fear of people are public places. The fear of public speaking is a very common form of this disorder.
Post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD is not simply caused from being in a war or battlefield situation. Many people who have witnessed or been directly involved in a dramatic event can be overcome by this illness.
Generalized anxiety disorder. Chronic or continued worry that outside what is considered normal concern may indicate a person is suffering from GAD.
Panic Attack Disorder. Unlike most other anxiety types, panic attack disorders are characterized by physical symptoms like a fast or pounding heartbeat. Panic attacks can come on without warning and last anywhere from a few minutes to as long as 30 minutes or more.
Although mental health professionals claim successful treatment of many of the very types of anxiety disorders, the fact is that anxiety is a chronic condition with long term treatment needs. Although it's possible to gain some relief through the various treatment programs available, I don't believe anxiety disorders are ever completely cured.

He wants to die young.
By: worriedfriend | 03-08-2008
i've made friends with this very friendly man. as i've got to know him better, i have noticed somethings that do not sound healthy to me such as him wanting to die by the age of 40 max. he doesnt want to get married or have children because he has claimed to have tried it once and things didnt work out. he actually wasnt even really married but just dated this girl for a really really really long time. he doesnt visit the doctor even when he is in severe pain and says that he deserves it. he almost never sleeps and claims that his daily 5 mile run keeps him going... he doesnt really open up. he talks about what has happened, but doesnt express his deep feelings about it. he has been through some great challeneges in life. i feel like there is something he is not over. and im very worried about him. when i try and point out that maybe he needs help or his way of thinking is not normal, he tells me that im wrong because he wouldnt lie to himself or "i love being outside of the norm". it seems as if he is in denial about the whole thing... and also that he is very weak emotionally. he breaks down and takes things very hard. he expresses no hatred or negative feelings towards anyone but god and he claims thats because he would rather god take him away than the people he keeps taking out of this life. it seems as though he is trying to run from the reality of life. i've done research on depression but i havent gotten any real results. i dont know what i could do to help him. i am very worried to a point where im thinking about this situation all the time. i have to find a way to get to him and make him understand. i believe he has been goign through this for a while now, not sure exactly how long. but i know its been over three years for sure. any advice? i am willing to do whatever it takes. and is something even wrong or am i over analyzing the situation? there is a lot more to his behavior than i expressed earlier ... i tried to sum it up to the best of my ability. otherwise he is a very very friendly person. one of those friends that you cant help but cherish. always there. always willing to go out of his way for you. i mean, you couldnt ask for more from a friend. he claims to not have very many close friends and has told me that he considers me one. he is very close with his family and does whatever he could for them. but he says that right now its all about them but later in life "i want to be selfish for once" and that's when he wants to end his life ... i really dont get it... please give me any advice or feedback you may have.
Overcoming Arachnophobia
By: CapitanaSparrow | 03-08-2008
I am trying to overcome arachnophobia. I have never really cared for spiders, but I have been able to deal with them throughout my youth and young adulthood. However, over the past two years I have noticed that a general disliking has progressed into an irrational fear with physical symptoms whenever I see a picture or actual spider. I begin to sweat, become shaky and itchy. My mind starts to panic and I HAVE to get the spider dead and away from me. Hours later, I will still be uncomfortable in the room where I saw one. This usually occurs if I see a spider in my apartment..where I have had to deal with what I believe to be brown recluse spiders on occasion, I have tried to think rationally, have read a conservation magazine about local spiders with large photos to "educate" myself. I am really needing advice on this other than "read about them and you'll realize they are more scared of you than you are of them." I am scared to do too much research online, because some of the websites with info on how to overcome it have photos of spiders on them- which does not help my frame of mind since I have the aforementioned reaction even to photos. I plan to do mission work in the future, and I know I will need to deal with spiders as part of life. PLEASE someone give me some sort of way to overcome this!
