Are Electronic Cigarettes Safe?

Since 2006, the electronic cigarette has attracted millions of people around the world who have switched from traditional cigarettes to the e-cigarette, also referred to as the "safe cigarette, the e-cigarette, and the smokeless cigarette".

Electronic cigarettes share some aspects of there traditional counterparts, such as appearance, feel and taste of a normal cigarette. But the differences are substantial in that the "safe cigarette" gets it's name because it produces none of the negative aspects of traditional smoking like tar, ignition (heat), up to 4000 types of chemical additives that often lead to respiratory and cardiac system diseases, nor the carcinogenic effects of traditional cigarettes.

Ever since the Surgeon General determined that cigarette smoking is hazardous to your health, cigarette companies have searched for ways to reduce tar and nicotine levels, in efforts to create a more safe smoking experience. Nothing, however, has ever come close to the electronic cigarette.

This revolutionary new smoking alternative, not only simulates cigarette smoke but also the temperature associated with dragging off a common cigarette (50-60 degrees Celsius), thus adding to the psychological habit without adding the hazardous substances which have proven to cause cancerous, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, hydrocyanic acid, acrolein, arsenic, lead and hydragyrum.

Smokeless cigarettes were first viewed with trepidation but more and more have become embraced by the public as well as the Medical Association. E-Cigarettes are now manufactured by a number of different companies throughout the US and China and are readily available across the United States and Europe, even the some of the most ardent skeptics have become believers once they try the electronic cigarette.

Adding to the safety benefits, the electronic cigarette has also been proven as a way for smokers to quit the habit, as the level of nicotine can be carefully monitored, thus giving the smoker the option of gradually lowering the level until he/she can quit without fear of withdrawals. Most electronic cigarette refill cartridges are available in full, medium, light and none, and while electronic cigarettes are not yet approved as smoking cessation devices, the potential for the devices to be used as such is somewhat obvious.

It's recommended that people who have demonstrated a sensitivity or allergy to nicotine, pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have unstable heart conditions should discuss the use of an electronic cigarette device with a doctor before using one. Additionally, electronic cigarettes may not be used by anyone under the legal smoking age in your state.

I highly doubt these are 'safe'. Nicotine = bad. If you're trying to kick the habit, suck it up and quit, and kick yourself in the head for starting in the first place!

I am an X smoker and have one condern. My boss started using e cigarrettes, and although I work in a government building where smoking is not permitted he thinks that is now alright to smoke at any time. So he smokes one of these constantly in a 10' X 15' foot enclosed room. Like I said I am an X smoker so I know the feeling and despite his claims that because it is water vapor there are no secondary effects I KNOW he is wrong. I do not want to start smoking again, neither e cigs or the real ones. Some regulation is in order. This has been going on for about a month now and if nothing is done I am complaining all the way up.

As a former smoker of 30 years (1.5 packs a day) I know how difficult it is to quit smoking. That said, you must be aware of "snake oil" salesmen who could care less about your health, only your money! If anyone wants to quit, please go to a doctor who has a practice..not these "internet Drs." A real Dr. will advise you to quit asap, not line the pockets of a product that we don't know enough about. It is a very hard habit to kick, but you will just waste your money on a placebo. No pill fixes your life!

So does this really answer the question 'are electronic cigarette safe?' I'm thinking of getting one of these because they sound great, but according to the BBC, these things haven't actually been tested by the appropriate governing body to see how inhaling vaporised nicotine affects the body. Any thoughts?? Cheers, Neil

I asked my doctor (gastro-enterologist) about nicotine inhalers and she told me the jury is not out yet as to the channel by which the nicotine in cigarettes causes cancer. She said it could be systemic, rather than through the lungs. Bottom line, she thought nicotine in any form is dangerous and research available on the web confirms that. That being said, I am planning to get one of the e-cigs to help go through the worst parts of quitting smoking. A little nicotine must be better than a lot.

The current FDA regulations in the USA classify cigarettes as tobacco that requires the use of ignition. I hate to sound like some paranoid nut, but I beleive that the FDA is having problems justifying taxation because it has not been proven to cause the same addictive side effects as traditional cigarretes and there has yet to be reported any health concerns, which would make the regultaion under their jurisdiction impossible. The FDA makes trillions each year on the sale of cigarettes and trillions more on the drugs used to treat smoking related illnesses, not to mention the asthma and alergy related ilness likely caused by second hand smoke especially in children with smoking parents.

I think the FDA is reaching for the fences. Enough people have used the products in enough countried and enough research has been done to validate the E-cigarette that the FDA is purely acting as a political bully to secure there positions of power.

MRI shows e-smokers show no respiritory damage after 2 years of regular use while the damage in smokers is significant. Although the nicotine is addictive, the barrage of chemicals in regular cigarettes increases the addiction and dependancies and causes irreversable damage that has yet to be experianced by any e-smoker in the comparable time frame.

there is so much i could put down here but it simply appears to be an FDA fear of a loss in substantial medical and "sin" tax and outside of the very real threat of nicotine poising present in any nicotine product there is no warrent for the FDA actions. quite honestly they should require proof of age and a credit card to keep this away from minors (which most do allready) and leave it at that

Started "smoking" my ecigarette 8 days ago & have cut my "real" cigarettes down to 5 per day from 1 pack per day. Went into this very skeptical but I must say..I'm starting to enjoy the ecig as much as my real cigs. It's only been 8 days and I'm hoping that after 40 years of 1 pack a day, I am on the way to quitting. And if not, I am assuming I've cut out alot of other dangerous ingredients found in "real" cigarettes.

I smoked for 34 yrs , 2 packs a day. Today i no longer smoke because of the E Cig! so you tell me how safe these are. I feel great! My cough completely went away and i can actually run without almost falling over! Amazing product! I still cant figure out why im not craving a cigarette or even wanting one and my last smoke was april 14th!! Amazing new intention! I went from high nicotine cartridges to medium , to low, and then to zero nicotine. It took about a month but completely off nicotine pain free! I rearly use my e cig today and if i lost it i wouldnt replace it. Amazing product....if you smoke..its a must buy! Buying the pen style ones i found much nicer...it dont look like a cigarette witch helps in stores and restaurants, the battery is bigger so holds a charge longer, and the cartridge is bigger which makes for holding more liquid.
I inhaled over 4000 chemicals off one real cigarette for 34 yrs...and u ask me if E cigs r more unsafe?? Give me a brake...i say its more like government dont want to loose millions in revenue off of both pharmacutical company and tobacco companies! I personally could care less if FDA ever approves. they let us smoke real cigarettes all these years and could of cared less about our health! I just know all them other quit smoking products dont work...for me and many others. The e cig is working for MANY.!

Nicotine doesn't CAUSE cancer, but it does allow cancerous cells to grow, meaning it doesn't allow your body's normal ability to kill abnormal cells in your body, like cancerous cells. wikipedia it for starters.

Don't get me wrong, it's still waaaaay better for you than normal cigarettes, and I really believe this invention is going to change the world. Overpopulation is a concern though, since it will save so many thousands of lives...hmmm

Thank God the smoking industry has finally found the solution--creating a smoke-free cigarette. For those of you out there who do not know, the nicotine content in the cigarette is actually very small compared to the rest of the dangerous chemicals tobacco companies put into their products, and there have been no medical findings that indicate nicotine causes cancer in any way shape or form. Lung cancer from smoking is caused from the overextended exposure of the lungs to carcinogens, not nicotine. In order for something to be carcinogenic it must first be burned or ignited. Electronic cigarettes do not burn anything at all, but instead "vaporize" or "atomize" the nicotine into a harmless water vapor which can then be taken into the lungs. Thus smoking an electronic cigarette CAN NOT CAUSE CANCER. I can finally smoke wherever I want again. I can't wait to be sitting in an airplane, in the office, in the subway, in a restaurant, in an elevator, in the mall, or any other smoke prohibited environment and be asked to put out my cigarette only to respond, "Cigarette? Oh you mean this thing? No, you see this is an electronic cigarette that only emits a harmless vapor, I can use it wherever I want." My only hope is that the bull**** that runs around in D.C. doesn't take away my freedoms anymore than it already has.

I have seen the electronic cigarette on the popular TV show called the Dr.s. It contains far less carcinogens and deadly toxins than traditional cigarettes. The electronic cigarette is a far better alternative than cigarettes. There are many good comapanies out there in the US and the UK. For a US based company I have personally tried the mini electronic cigarette from Smokeless Delite and like it.
