It won’t be wrong to say that agriculture is the backbone of any economy. Agriculture is the first and foremost source of livelihood, even in this age of industrialization. An economy is unthinkable without agriculture. Today, apart from the people having agricultural background, no one else is much keen on pursuing a career in agriculture. The fact is that, even today, not a single economy is complete without the contribution of agriculture. Apart from this, agriculture caters to the basic needs of human beings. Therefore, no matter if human beings take long strides in industrialization, the success is not complete without equal development in the most rudimentary and elementary occupation of the human race.
With the gradual improvement in all the possible human occupations, agriculture is also not lagging behind. Today, in the developed countries, tools of modern science are increasingly being used for progress in agriculture. As a result, productivity is multiplied and at the same time, time is also saved. Apart from the developed nations, the developing countries where the majority of the population is dependant on agriculture, are utilizing top-notch technologies in order to improve agricultural productivity in a lesser time frame.
India is the perfect example of a country where agriculture provides daily bread and butter to a whopping majority. The climate of India is such that it supports the large-scale cultivation of a whole array of crops and pulses. The father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi very rightly remarked that in order to bring about uniform development of the country, first of all, the agricultural sector needs to be strengthened. The living conditions of the farmers that constitute the majority of the population, are to be uplifted. The gateway to progress and development in this country is none but the villages. It would be nothing but a sham to neglect the villages and attempt to achieve progress in towns only. This sort of development is likely to be very superficial and unfortunately this is what is happening in India currently.
No doubt Indian economy is among the fastest emerging economies in the world today. The country has also emerged as a name to reckon with when it comes to employing a software company or for deploying IT services like custom software development and web application development, still the state of the villages is far from satisfactory. The grass root population of the country is still in dire states. The social evils and the social stigmas are very much active in the India and the country also has one of the highest poverty rates in the world. Sadly enough it seems that even the government has lost sight of the real goal. If India is to attain development in the real terms the villages and their main occupation namely agriculture can in no way be overlooked. But in almost all the five year plans though agriculture has been the top most priority the target set for agricultural development has seldom been met. It is very important that India understands this fact if it has really to become a superpower!
