In this article Anne Harvester writes about medicinal herbs.
The roots of the Ashwagandha plant, also known by the botanical Latin name of Withania somnifera, are what are typically sold as medicinal herbs. Certified organic and kosher versions of ashwagandha are also available online and at better herbal stores.
Other common names for ashwagandha include Indian ginseng, winter cherry, ajagandha, kanaje hindi and samm al ferakh. These dried herbs are in the same plant family, known in Latin as solanaceae, as the common tomato plant. The plant grows as a five-foot tall evergreen shrub that produces yellow flowers like the tomato plant and small red fruit. It grows well in the climate of India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
As medicinal herbs, ashwagandha is used in India as a tranquilizer. It may act as an abortifacient, and thus should not be used if you are pregnant. It may help as an antibacterial, and may help to increase libido. Ashwagandha may have an astringent quality, and may help body ducts to clear obstructions. Medicinal herbs such as ashwagandha may help to increase urine flow, and may help to increase drowsiness. These dried herbs are commonly used as a tonic to generally improve health.
The berries of this plant are used in vegetarian cheese making. They cause the liquid to coagulate and form cheese curds.
This is just one of many medicinal herbs that you will find available for sale online from fine herbal retailers. Other herbal products are available. These include herbs and spices suitable for culinary purposes. Herbs are often used as the main ingredient in many fine teas, including black teas, green teas and chai teas. Herbs are also used for the production of essential oils. These oils are used in aromatherapy products, and diffuser devices. The diffusers, which may run on electricity, or the light generated from a light bulb or candle, and even body heat, help to spread the wonderful fragrance of the herbal oils you select throughout any room you are in, and may help to soothe your spirits. Personal care products often utilize herbs as part of their ingredient list. They can include such items as bath blends that scent the air and soften your skin in the bath, or cosmetics, perfumes, body lotions, toothpastes and others. The home can also benefit from dried herbs, which can be used in the laundry room in different ways. Lavender or citrus leaves can go into a cloth bag that is tossed in with the damp laundry in your dryer to impart their fragrant scents. Soaps are also made that utilize the scent of herbs, and these and other products can be procured from herbal stores online.
