There are a number of sleep disorders in children and sleepwalking or somnambulism can be a serious issue for the parents of children sleepwalking as it poses safety and security issues for them. The children sleepwalking generally do not make any noise and so the activities that they do at night can go unnoticed by adults. During these episodes when the brain of sleepwalking children is actually in a deep sleep phase they may eat, drink, dress up, open the door and wander out of the house and in extreme cases can be lost or hit by a vehicle on the road.

Sleepwalking in children occurs in almost 15% children between the age of 5-15 years and outgrows by the time they reach adolescence.   Doctors do not relate sleepwalking in children with any other serious mental disorder but there are some precautions that parents have to take so that the children sleepwalking are safe and no unwanted incident may occur. The doors and windows of the house should be bolted securely at night, the children sleepwalking should be made to sleep on low height beds rather than on bunkers. It is advisable to have a bell to be hung on the door knob of the room of sleepwalking children, or some sort of alarm can be used to awaken the parents. The room where the sleepwalking children sleep should be clutter free and no object that might hurt the children sleepwalking should be there in the room.

A doctor or sleep specialist should be consulted if the episodes of sleepwalking in children occur more frequently as there are medicines that help to control such episodes. Researchers have found that sleepwalking in children generally occurs few hours after sleeping and in the deep sleep phases.  There are no specific or certain reasons for sleepwalking in children although factors like a disturbed sleep cycle, bedwetting, anxiety or stress, fights with someone, fever, headaches could be probable reasons.
