Be cautious about sleepwalking children

Sleepwalking in children or somnambulism, as it is referred to by doctors is a common problem that occurs in about 15% children aged 5-15 years. These episodes of sleepwalking in children may entail various activities like roaming around the house, eating, dressing up, opening the doors and walking out of the house and in extreme cases driving or any other activity also. The brain of children sleepwalking is actually deep asleep but the body is active and hence the child is able to navigate activities without remembering them later.

Sleepwalking in children is a cause of concern for the parents and it is not without reason. Although doctors mention that sleepwalking in children is not associated with any other mental disorder or disease, the safety and security of sleepwalking children can be at stake and so a doctor should be consulted and precautions should be take to deal with this.

No specific causes have been identified for sleepwalking in children but doctors and researchers attribute it to certain factors like – lack of proper sleep, disturbed sleep/wake cycle, fight with siblings or friends, high fever, migranes, some sort of fatigue o anxiety etc. episodes of sleepwalking in children may last from 5 minutes to half an hour and they appear to be awake with eyes open but in reality they are in deep sleep.

Researchers advise that in order to control sleepwalking children  parents should maintain a time diary and awaken the sleepwalking children 15 minutes before the episode occurs each night each night and keep them awaken for 5 minutes and then make them go back to sleep. This greatly helps to reduce sleepwalking in children.  It is also advisable to seek a doctor’s advice in case there is no reduction in the episodes of sleepwalking.
