Be cautious and alert to manage episodes of sleepwalking in children

Sleepwalking in children or somnambulism as a sleep disorder occurs in children between 5-15 years of age.  It is advisable to refer to a doctor in the event of a child exhibiting sleepwalking as the child could have some underlying psychological or physiological problems. Recurrent episodes of sleepwalking in children may worry parents and so a doctor should be consulted and treatment should be sought accordingly. But if children sleepwalk regularly then parents have to take safety measures in order to secure the sleepwalking children during such episodes.

Some do’s and don’ts are as follows:

  • Ensure that you lock and secure doors and windows properly each night
  • Hang a bell on the door knobs of the room of sleepwalking children or some alarm to alert the parents if the child sleepwalks
  • Don’t awaken the children sleepwalking as that may scare them, just guide them back to sleep peacefully
  • Don’t make the sleepwalking children sleep on bunk beds, instead use low beds or try to make them sleep on the ground floor of the home to prevent any untoward incidents
  • Keep the bedrooms of sleepwalking children clutter free and  breakable items should also be removed
  • Gates at stairways can be installed in case of sleepwalking children sleeping on upper floors of homes
  • A regular and relaxing bedtime routine should be established by parents for sleepwalking children

Sleepwalking children may indulge in a variety of activities like getting up and roaming about the house, dress up and walking out, eating, drinking and often urinating in unusual places etc.  There are no specific reasons for sleepwalking in children and it is said to occur in the deep sleep stages and it is attributed to certain factors like – disturbed sleep/wake cycle, fevers, headaches, anxiety or stress, bedwetting, fights with siblings or friends etc. Sleepwalking in children generally outgrows with time and there may be one or few episodes in the lifetime of a child.

  1. During episodes of sleepwalking in children, they may appear awake and a ‘glassy’ kind of look is seen, but in reality the brain is deep asleep and so the children sleepwalking cannot recollect the episodes later. It is advisable not to make them feel embarrassed by talking about these episodes repeatedly at a later point. Doctors prescribe certain medicines for sleepwalking children like diazepam or lorazepam that prove to be useful in reducing these episodes. It is important for parents of sleepwalking children to be ready and alert to handle these episodes without panic.
