Breaking Diet Plateaus - Strategically Overeating One Day Each Week to Break Plateaus

Breaking a diet plateau is easy and by understanding why they happen you will see how strategically adding an overeating or "cheat" day once a week will keep your weight loss consistent week after week.

Why does your weight plateau on a diet?

When you diet a hormone in your body called leptin sends up a distress signal.  It is leptin's job to report to the brain when it detects changes in the amount of food coming into the body.  When you drop the amount of food you are eating leptin alerts the brain and body to the fact that there may be a famine.

The body then jumps into protective mode and takes actions to prevent you from starving to death.  The action that effects you the most as a dieter is the slowing of your metabolism.  When your metabolism slows your ability to burn fat slows.  This is done so your body can preserve stored energy sources, i.e. FAT.

Of course when your fat burning slows down you are faced with the challenge of a plateau.

How overeating results in breaking diet plateaus.

Since your metabolism slows when you diet, what you need to do is find a way to diet AND keep your metabolism pumping strong.  The way to do this is to strategically overeat one day a week.

By following your diet for the first 6 days of the week and then taking the 7th day off and overeating favorite foods such as pizza, chips, baked goods, etc. you boost your metabolism and get the benefits of full fat burning.

You might be worried that this one day of overeating, what is referred to as a "cheat day" will cause you to gain weight.  What research and thousands of real life case studies have found however is the exact opposite.  Yes, you will gain some water weight from the cheat day but because your metabolism rebounds so quickly your body cannot create new fat ahead of your rising metabolism and you end the week with a net weight loss.
