This disease stops the lungs from working causing breathlessness and wheezing. Its more like chronic bronchitis. It occurs as a result of smoking which damage the elastic supporting structure within the lungs. This leads to breakdown and collapse of some of the airways which cause air to become trapped and the lungs overinflated. Long term smokers get this disease.
The symptoms of bronchitis emphysema comes in winter and are worse in the morning and so it is important to see a doctor for detailed lung function tests and x- rays. The most devastating thing about bronchitis emphysema is that it has no cure because any damage to the lungs is irreversible.
For treatment of bronchitis emphysema, it is good to avoid dusty and smoky environments to slow down progression of the disease. Also treatment of any bacterial infection is important to ease symptoms. Using practical methods can help like sleeping in a warm bedroom, inhalation of steam and cough suppressants.
Sometimes people may have asthma symptoms in addition to emphysema. Asthma treatments, such as an inhaler (puffer) may help alleviate some of the symptoms of wheezing and breathlessness.
A bronchodilaters drug such as Albutarol (e.g. Vetoing) usually taken via an inhaler or a nebulizer, may be used to relieve the constriction of the airways.
People who have bronchitis emphysema should have a flu immunization each year as they are particularly vulnerable to the complications of flu. Also, think about getting an injection against pneumonia – this injection protects against the pneumococcus bacterium, and lasts up to ten years.
