Construction Dangers Pose a Threat to Increased Eye Injuries On the Job

According to the Center to Protect Worker's Rights (CPWR), close to 11,000 eye injuries occur on an annual basis. Additionally, it has been reported that the construction industry as a whole "has a much higher rate of eye injuries."

Also, construction workers, according to EHS Today, account for 10.6 percent of lost-time injuries in the construction field.

There are a plethora of dangers that exist on a construction site including the following, according to the CPWR:

* nails

* pieces of metal

* splinters

* cut wire

* welding burns

* dust

* chemical burns

* dangerous liquids and gases

* grit from grinding and chipping

Due to the extensive dangers posed to worker's eyes, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have required that, "protective equipment, including personal protective equipment for eyes, face, and head, and extremities, protective shields and barriers, shall be provided, used, and maintained...wherever it is necessary by reason of hazard." However, often times, construction employees are still harmed either from not wearing eye protection or being issued the wrong type of eye protection or goggles.

The Center for Construction Research and Training recommends that individuals employed by the construction industry should always do the following to protect themselves from further harm that could be caused to eyes including:

* wearing goggles

* wear a plastic shield during chemical work

* wear proper protection during welding and grinding

* wear goggles to prevent flying particles from entering the eye orifice

* wear goggles and a respirator during sanding procedures
