Coping With Baby Colic

Is your baby crying a lot and are you finding it difficult to cope? It is possible that your baby is suffering from colic. 1 in 5 babies suffer and it can be a very distressing time for parents trying to deal with a newborn. Coping with a new routine and probably suffering from lack of sleep, you may feel that colic is the final straw.

Before you take any action to control or prevent the colic, it is essential that you establish that you have the correct diagnosis. The normal symptoms of colic are continuous loud crying – the baby seems inconsolable, flexing and extending the legs, clenching fists and often an extended stomach. Many parents report this happening late afternoon but it can be any time. Even if these are the symptoms your baby shows, you should always consult your doctor. Colic is not life threatening, although it may be very distressing for both you and your baby. Babies are very sensitive to atmosphere and if you allow yourself to get stressed, they will pick up on this. Try to get a break away for a few hours if you possible can.

Once your doctor has diagnosed colic, you should try to establish a possible cause. There have been a number of theories put forward. Colic normally disappears by the time a baby is about four months old and it may be that the digestive system is not be fully formed. If you are breastfeeding then you should check that something you are eating is not causing the problem. Examine your diet and try eliminating different foods, including dairy products, to see if the colic lessens. If you are bottle feeding your doctor may suggest a change of formula. If baby is very greedy, don't overfeed and make him feel bloated. We all get indigestion if we eat too much. Feed a little less and more often.

Apart from watching diet there are a number of other options open to you. Many parents find that a continuous sound, such as a washing machine has a soothing effect and there are a number of CD's on the market specifically for colicky babies. Massage is becoming very popular and you may be able to find a course in your area. It could help you relax, as well as create an opportunity to meet other moms. Gripe water is a traditional remedy but get your doctor's advice before giving any medicine.
