If you want to stay healthy you have got to do some kind of exercise. There is no way around this. However, the lifestyle of most people does not include any exercise, save from walking to and from their automobile. If you know that you need exercise, but have been unable to change your way of life to include more of it, here are some tips to get in the exercise in a way that does not disrupt your already busy daily routine.
One of the easiest ways to get more exercise is to start walking a bit more than you usually do. A normal person probably walks less than one mile per day but with a bit of adjustment this amount can be increased. If you are taking your car to work, try parking it a bit further away than usual, and walk the rest of the way.
Another way to get more walking into your life is to schedule a short walk after dinner. This is one of the best times to walk because it helps you to digest your food and get a better sleep. Just go out of your house after dinner, and walk for 20 minutes, and then return. Put on your mp3 player and listen to music, the radio, a pod cast, an audio-book or some music. It does not have to be boring, and in fact it can be just as interesting as the TV show that you usually watch after eating dinner.
If you walk up the stairs instead of using the elevator, then you burn a few more calories too, or if you walk instead of using a moving belt at an airport or in a city transit system, then you will burn some more.
Do you like animals? Then get a dog and start walking him or her daily. You may laugh at this, but research has actually been done showing that people who walk a dog daily lose a significant amount of weight in a year, just from this single activity.
Even better than walking with a dog, is go walking with a friend or friends. If you try it alone you may falter, but if you have a friend who is committed to walking, then he or she will encourage you during your lazy moments. So find someone else who needs a bit more exercise and make a daily time for walking together. Spend the time talking and enjoying yourselves, and you won't even notice that you are exercising.
It is good to get around 30 minutes of walking and exercise done every day, or you can do it every other day, but do 45 minutes. The ideal is to walk and work up a sweat, then you know that you have gotten some good exercise.
Daily exercise is one of the secrets of longevity and it will help you to overcome obesity and many other ailments associated with a sedentary lifestyle. So take a vow to increase your exercise, and then get on your feet and start walking.
