Do You Know What Causes Belly Fat?

Belly fat is a concern for both men and women and when it comes to figuring out what causes belly fat there are three main areas to consider.  This article shows you what those three areas are so you can discover what causes it and what you can do to prevent it.

1.  The first cause is the most overlooked cause and that is stress. Being under constant stress triggers the production of cortisol, a stress hormone that is produced by your adrenal gland.  There is a link between high cortisol levels and storage of body fat, particularly in the belly.   It makes sense to take steps to lessen the stress in your life, this is one of the best ways to keep cortisol in the normal range. The following suggestions can help you lower your stress level, get out in the fresh air, practice deep breathing exercises, get more sleep, or meditate.

2.  Weight is also influenced by advanced age. As we grow older fat is no longer deposited as commonly in the arms, legs, butt and thighs and is more commonly deposited in the belly.  For women fat accumulation in the midsection is also impacted by the onset of menopause which changes the way the body breaks down fat and stores it.

3.  A diet high in processed foods adds to the problem. Processed foods contain refined carbohydrates, sugar and hydrogenated oils all of which add weight.  Limit packaged foods which contain these ingredients and focus your nutrition on whole foods such as complex carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and good fats such as olive oil, avocado, nuts and fish oils.
