Green tea has long been associated with various healing properties. But aside from that, green tea can also help people dealing with body weight issues. If you are one of these people, all you have to do is drink green tea to lose weight.
Green tea and weight loss have recently been the talk of the town, with green tea being touted as an effective way to lose weight. Because of this, more and more people are including green tea in their daily diet in the hopes of losing extra pounds. But is drinking green tea to lose weight really effective? Here are some facts that will prove a point.
1) Green tea boosts your metabolic rates
It has been reported in a study that drinking green tea to lose weight is an effective weight reduction alternative. The study discovered that taking green tea extract provides a considerable increase in energy expenditure, also called a metabolism boost. According to the researchers who conducted the study, green tea extract has properties that help boost metabolism by 4 percent over a 24-hour period. The researchers attributed the metabolic effects to the high concentrations of catechin polyphenols in green tea. The catechins help increase fat oxidation levels and accelerate the process of thermogenesis, the process by which the body generates heat or energy by increasing the metabolic rate above normal levels.
2) Green tea helps you burn more calories
People who drink green tea to lose weight are on the right path. Studies done on the health benefits of green tea showed that adults who consume green tea burn 78 calories a day. The amount of calories burned is dependent on an individual’s size. The more weight is involved, the more calories are burned. If there is less weight, lesser calories are burned. Apart from size, an individual’s current weight also influences the number of calories burned. However, these two are not the only factors that affect your metabolism rate. Other aspects that have an influence on your calorie burn are the combination of food you eat and the frequency of physical activity.
2) Green tea lowers fat absorption
Studies have also shown that green tea is capable of reducing the absorption of fat from the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream right after meals. Catechins in the green tea are believed to work by suppressing the lipid absorption from the diet. This catechin action is essential since it prevents the body from accumulating fat, while helping to reduce cholesterol at the same time.
In one animal study, a group of rats were fed with a diet that contained a substantial amount of catechins; while the other group was given polyphenol-free food. The study results showed that the rats given a catechin diet were observed to have a higher fat excretion in their feces. This study was thought to have the same results in humans.
3) Green tea facilitates weight loss by regulating glucose
Weight gain typically occurs when excess sugar and fat are stored in the body as fat cells. By drinking green tea to lose weight, you help your body get rid of these fat cells. The catechins in green tea, specifically the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), effectively inhibit the glucose movement in these fat cells, thus preventing obesity. Green tea also acts as glucose regulator by slowing the rise in blood sugar levels after a meal, preventing high insulin spikes, which lead to fat storage.
