Dyshidrosis Treatment: How you Can Help yourself

Dyshidrosis, also known as Dyshidrotic Eczema, is a chronic skin condition which is characterized by small blisters on the hands and feet. The name "Dyshidrosis" comes from the word "dyshidrotic" which means "bad sweating" which was deemed as the cause. Sometimes it is also known as Pompholyx which means "bubble" in Greek referring to the blisters on the skin. In some cases, pmpholx refers to hand dyshidrosis. This skin condition is not contagious to others, but it can cause extreme stress and pain to the sufferers. Not to mention the unsightly nature of the condition can cause social anxiety and low self esteem.

Till today, the definite cause of Dyshidrosis is unknown. It is often associated with other skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, bacterial infection or excessive stress. However, there are several probable factors which can aggravate the condition:

- Nickel allergy may be a significant contributing factor to dyshidrosis. Tests have shown that dyshidrosis sufferers who are given a low nickel diet reported having less flare ups.

- Coming into contact with allergens may be the cause.

- Metal toxicity such as copper, mercury and nickel

- Other possible factors include aspirin ingestion, oral contraceptives, cigarette smoking, and implanted metals.

Unfortunately, since dyshidrosis is a type of eczema, the most common treatment for dyshidrosis is topical steroids which can bring about harmful long term effects such as skin thinning. Other methods include the use of Hydrogen Peroxide (35% strength) and Potassium Permanganate solution. Both of these can work to a certain extend but the side effects include significant burning and itching.

Therefore,it is recommended that to treat Dyshidrosis, it is necessary to go back to the basics, that is to strenghten the immune system and eliminating toxins from the body. You can check out the various methods to achieve a strong immune system via feeding the body the right food at EczemaFreeNaturally.com

Having the basics taken care of, here are some of the home remedies you can try to get relief for Dyshidrosis:

- Use emollients frequently to prevent cracking and itching. Avoid petroleum jelly as it does not absorb into the skin.

- Try soaking in sea salts or epson salts. Some found relief in soaking in white vinegar.

- Avoid harsh shampoos and body wash. Stick with gentle bath oil. If you are having flare ups, remember to wear gloves when washing hair or bathing.

- Avoid nickel if you are allergic to it. Nickel can present in certain types of foods, jewelry, computer keyboards, dental filling and even bra.

- Avoid stressful situations or learn stress management

- Avoid scratching. I know it is easier said than done. Try wearing unbleached cotton gloves to protect your hands.

- Plantain (Plantago major) infused in olive or other oil can be soothing.

- Wear cotton gloves while reading newspapers, books and magazines. The lead in the ink may be an irritant.

- Avoid hand sanitizing products which contains alcohol. Alcohol is drying and may aggravate the condition.

- Wash affected hands and feet with cool water and apply a moisturizer as soon as possible.

Although dyshidrosis is not life threatening, this skin condition can cause extreme pain and stress to the sufferes. While there is no definite treatment for dyshidrosis, one can aid the healing of this condition by practising a healthy lifestyle. For more information on this, please visit EczemaFreeNaturally.com

For anyone suffering from this, I can recommend bothering your Dr. to prescribe .5 mg dexamethosone (which is VERY cheap in generic form.) I get 40 pills for one year, for about $15.00-$20.00. Take a pill at the FIRST sign of inflammation, then if there is still swelling take another one 4 hours later. If, by the time you take the pill the swelling is already substantial, take 2 pills, and then 1 more 4 hours later. I have never needed to take more than three pills for an occurrence. This doesn't eliminate the condition, but the swelling (and therefore the later cracking) will be much reduced. Also - having a water softener in home could make a big difference - it does for me. The worst my skin ever was when I was in school dorms and apartments in a town with very hard water.

Keep passing information - most Dr.'s seem to know very little about this, and it is up to those of us who suffer to pass along anything that works - or doesn't!

I suffered this form of eruptions about 3 weeks ago. I tried Ayurveda treatment which helped in cleansing my system and the wounds quickly healed. During this period, I avoided spicy, oily and fatty food. Fruits, vegetables and Brown rice with Yoghurt was my diet. During the same time I got bad itchy and burning feet. The itching was intense and I was very annoyed as it disturbed my night sleep. Thanks to the internet. I read the experiences of many such people and one suggested taking a round of B Complex tablets for a week. B-Complex tablets fortified with Vitamin C did wonders. Burning vanished after 3 days though I was told to be patient and take the tablets for as long as I feel good. One tablet a day actually made me feel great in 3 days. I read more articles and realised that B-complex tablets are harmless and can be taken everyday without a doctor's prescription. I will keep the recommendations of DAGS in mind. I hope someone will benefit from my experiences. If anyone is interested to know which Ayurveda medicines I took, I will be happy to provide. You can also reach a good Ayurveda Doctor at avsbangalore@sancharnet.in or call +91-80-26572956 (Bangalore, India) and speak to Dr. Sujith S.Warrier. For those new to Ayurveda, take note that, there is absolutely no side effects on consuming Ayurveda medications. Either it works for you or it goes out as quitely as it went in. Good health to all of you.

October 2007 is when this or something like ( Dyshidrosis ) hit me all of a sudden. Yellow puss was driping from my hands and feet. Tired to treat it myself for a week or so, but it got so bad that I had to go too the ER and they put me in isolation for ten days. At this time I give myself an injection of ( 50MG of ENBREL ) once a week, it was twice a week. 65% better but not gone. I`m 61 years old. 2003 I had two screws put in each of my big toes because there was no cartilage in the first joint of each toe. I have been wondering if this might have something to do with my condition.

There are a number of factors that can cause psoriasis to appear or flare up after a remission period. These factors include smoking or exposure to smokers, sun exposure (not necessarily excessive) and excessive alcohol intake. Additionally, injuries to the skin can also trigger psoriasis as can skin infections and in some cases, even scratching as the body's T cells (see previous article) may incorrectly see this as a threat and overreact by forming excess skin cells.
