Reportes de la organización mundial de la salud y de otro lugar estiman que la enfermedad mental comprende el 15% de la carga global de enfermedades. La depresión y la ansiedad contribuyen fuertemente con estos números. Un avance en el tratamiento es ofrecido por varios medicamentos diseñados a estimular los niveles del inhibidor del principal neurotransmisor del cerebro, el ácido gamma %u2013amino butírico (o GABA). Los resultados publicados por la Boston University School of Medicine informan que el yoga puede elevar estos niveles de GABA en el cerebro y puede proporcionar una manera de tratar estos trastornos.
Los investigadores utilizaron imágenes espectroscópicas de resonancia magnética (IERM) (en Ingles MRSI) para comparar los niveles de GABA de 8 sujetos, antes y después de una hora de yoga, con aquellos que en vez de realizar la técnica oriental, leyeron durante esa hora. Los resultados fueron de un 27% de incremento en los niveles de GABA en el grupo del Yoga con ningún cambio en el grupo control con respecto a los niveles de punto de partida.
Los investigadores creen que el yoga mantiene una promesa como un método rentable, natural y ampliamente disponible para aliviar síntomas de trastornos asociados con los bajos niveles de GABA. El yoga se encuentra ampliamente disponible en muchas áreas y ya se ha encontrado que tiene muchos otros beneficios para la salud.
