Facts About Strep Throat

The condition known as strep throat is caused by group A streptococcus, a bacterium responsible for a variety of health problems. The actions that this bacteria has on the body of a human are very wide and sometimes very dangerous. A person attacked by group A streptococcus can get a mild skin infection or strep throat, or as seen in more severe cases of infection, life threatening toxic shock syndrome, and necrotic fasciitis ( or more commonly known as the terrible flesh eating disease). We are all familiarized with the strep throat illness, sometimes followed by minor skin infection. Scientists and doctors estimate that some 10 million cases of strep throat occur only in the USA.

On top of the fact that they can trigger illnesses such as strep throat or mild skin problems, they can also cause severe infections in tissues: group of cells joined together to perform the same function in organs or parts of the body: lungs, bones, spinal cord, and abdomen.

Strep throat usually shows up with red and painful sore throat with additional white patches on the tonsils. Other symptoms may include swollen lymph nodes in the neck, head aches and probably even fever. Children may also experience nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pane much more than grown adults.

Direct contact with the saliva of the patient with group A strep will most certainly infect the healthy person. In normal conditions it is not enough just to touch a patient to get infected. Crowded environments like schools, dormitories, or different institutions can actually facilitate the spreading of the disease. Food products that have been contaminated also pose a great risks for healthy people if consumed. Once a person is infected he can pass on the disease for up to 2 or 3 weeks from the tie of infections, although he himself would not experience any symptoms. After 24 hours of proper medication with antibiotics the patient no longer transmits germs to other people.

To be shore that he makes a correct diagnose, the doctor will most certainly take a swab or sample of material from the neck of the infected patient. The sample will then be thoroughly analyzed in the lab. Thanks to modern technology doctors can now do this in just about 20 minutes from the time of the sampling. If the test comes in negative, but the doctor wants to be shore, the doctor will make a more detailed test that can tae up to 48 hours to analyze. If this too comes in negative than another type of infection is most certainly the cause.

Proper treatment must always be left to decide by the professional doctor, if the infection is to be defeated.
