Finding the Right Pediatrician for your Baby

As a new parent, you have all sorts of things to be happy about. The joy of having an adorable sweet baby is one of the best perks about being a parent. However, you also have to remember that this is not all about fun. Being a parent is a serious endeavor that comes with a wide variety of responsibilities.

Speaking of which, one of your prime duties is to find the right pediatrician for your baby. This is crucial because your baby’s doctor will help you greatly in making sure that your little one develops and grows up healthy and active. Here are some factors to consider to when looking for a pediatrician.

Educational Background and Credentials

First, you need to ensure that your child’s doctor has specialized training in pediatrics or family medicine. This is to see to it that your doctor is capable of treating your child’s illnesses and contributing to your child’s growth and development.

Reputation and Experience

Reputation and experience are also very important factors to look into when searching for your child’s pediatrician. Talk to the doctor’s patients so you would have an idea about the state of practice and standing of the pediatrician. Doing a background check online using websites run by administrators of state medical licensure boards can also be useful, as you will find several important information here such as disciplinary actions or criminal charges filed against physicians.

Medical Philosophy

A doctor’s overall philosophy in medicine should coincide with yours to ensure a harmonious doctor-patient relationship. You cannot rely on a doctor that focuses on herbal treatments if you do not believe in this yourself. You should also not go for a pediatrician that gives more importance to treatment than prevention if your belief is the opposite.

Location of Practice

The proximity of the doctor’s clinic also plays a role in your choice. It should be near at to your home or work. Also, the environment should be pleasant and reassuring enough so that your baby will not feel queasy and uncomfortable during check-ups. When your baby grows up to become little child, the environmental atmosphere of the clinic can have a big effect on how a child will perceive medical check-ups. The ambience is not the only thing to consider. The staff in the clinic should also be friendly and helpful.

Rapport with Children

Another important thing to keep in mind is that your doctor should be someone whom your child would be comfortable with. If you see that the doctor has no rapport with children, you should go on to find another one. You would not want to your kid to fear his doctor or worse, have nightmares every time it is time to go to the clinic.

Policies and Fees

Different doctors have different policies and fees. Some doctors allow calls anytime of the day; others are only accessible for certain periods. Some doctors permit walk-in services while others do not. Some doctors charge very high rates while others have lower fees. Determine if the policies and fees of your pediatrician are reasonable for you.

It is actually not that difficult to find a pediatrician who you will be able to trust and rely on. Once you do, make sure you cultivate a healthy and harmonious relationship with the doctor for the sake of your little one.
