Full, pouty lips seem to be all the rage in Hollywood these days. From Angelina Jolie to Scarlett Johansson, the full-lipped look is definitely in.
While not all of us necessarily want the extreme, pouty look of these Hollywood starlets, we might not be completely happy with the shape or size of our lips. Your lips might be particularly thin, or asymmetrical, or poorly defined, making you self-conscious about your appearance. If this is the case, lip augmentation might be right for you.
Lip augmentation is achieved through injections of fillers into the lips. The size and shape of the lips can be dramatically altered in a single session, giving you fuller, more shapely lips. Depending on what final result you wish to achieve, you might need more injections, but the procedure can generally be completed in one office visit.
Injections can be administered right in your cosmetic surgeon’s office, under a local anesthetic to reduce your discomfort. After the procedure, you can continue with your daily activities, with no necessary downtime.
Based on your goals and concerns, your cosmetic surgeon will recommend a filler best suited to your needs. Among commonly used injectable fillers are:
- Restylane®. Restylane is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that offers long-lasting results and very little chance of allergic reaction.
- Perlane®. Perlane is very similar to Restylane, but contains more hyaluronic acid.
- Radiesse®. Radiesse consists of calcium spheres suspended in a gel. It helps stimulate the body to produce additional collagen, and is ideal for adding facial contours.
These high quality dermal fillers are often used to help fill in fine lines and wrinkles in the face, but they can also be used to augment and modify the shape of the lips. All eventually absorb into the body, so you’ll need to have additional treatments later if you wish to maintain the look your surgeon has created. Different fillers last longer than others, but generally treatments will last six months to a year.
A board certified plastic surgeon can give you the best results in lip augmentation and any other cosmetic procedure. Be sure to consult with your surgeon to be sure you understand what results can be expected from a lip augmentation procedure. Communication between you and your doctor is the most important factor in a satisfactory result.
