Getting a Better Night of Sleep Without Having to Resort to Sleeping Pills

Many people nowadays have busy and often stressful lives and this can cause several sleep problems including insomnia. For far too many people this means turning to sleeping pills as a fast and simple answer but, unluckily, this short term answer all too often results in long term difficulties as you become addicted to your sleeping pills, they are no longer as effective as they once were and side effects start to appear.

The answer to sleep difficulties therefore is to look for an alternative method of treatment and to look for an insomnia cure that does not involve using sleeping pills. This said, here are four very simple things to help you to get a sound night's sleep.

1. Make time for a little regular exercise. Exercise is an excellent way to reduce the stresses and strains of life and there are numerous exercise routines available to suit all tastes. For example, exercise does not have to be confined to the gym which many people find to be the height of boredom. Aerobic exercise is without doubt best and so any sort of outdoor games, walking, swimming, tennis, badminton and many other activities are just fine. Remember though that you should not take exercise too near to bedtime and so late afternoon or early evening is a very good time to pick.

2. Learn a relaxation technique. To get a good night's sleep you have to relax both your body and your mind and this means taking a bit of quiet time to focus your attention on clearing your mind and relaxing your body. Here there are all kinds of different relaxation techniques that you can follow and the secret is to find one which you like and that works for you and then to set fifteen or twenty minutes aside every evening to relax before retiring for the night.

3. Recognize the importance of laughter. It is frequently said that 'laughter is the best medicine' and this is a very true saying. We are not talking here necessarily about the need to laugh out loud in true 'belly laugh' fashion and for many people engaging in an activity that simply raises a smile is enough. One good way to achieve this is to watch something comical on television, instead of an action packed movie, during the evening or to read a humorous book or magazine before going to sleep.

4. Ensure that you are eating the right foods. The body is really a chemical factory and the food that you eat has a significant effect on the degree of chemical activity within the body. Accordingly it is important that you stay away from foods that are likely to have a stimulant effect in the hours before you go to bed. For example, stay away from such things as alcohol and caffeine and rich foods like those that are high in sugar. You should also avoid consuming a heavy meal too near to bedtime and, though you should not go to bed hungry, a light meal that is just enough to remove those hunger pangs, instead of a large pizza is the secret to a good night's sleep.

These are of course merely 4 of the many different things that you can do to see that you get a good night's sleep and the secret to curing insomnia is to look at natural lifestyle answers and not follow the traditional and damaging sleeping pill route that so many people have followed for years.
