Guidelines for management of sleepwalking in children

Out of the many sleep disorders, Somnambulism or sleepwalking in children occurs in about 15% of children aged between 5 to 15 years. It generally outgrows with age and although doctors and psychologists do not relate any serious mental disorder with it, sleepwalking children are a cause of concern for their parents. The reasons for this are mainly safety related because the sleepwalking children are actually in a deep sleep stage and are not aware of their episodes and may hurt themselves or others.

There are no specific reasons for sleepwalking in children but doctors attribute causes like fevers, headaches, disturbed wake/sleep cycles, fights with siblings, anxiety or depression etc. as some probable causes. Research has shown that during these episodes the brain of sleepwalking children is actually asleep but some parts are awake leading to the physical activity in the sleepwalking episodes like dressing up, walking, eating, trying to open doors and windows and walking out of the house etc. hence it becomes a matter of concern for parents and caregivers.

During episodes of sleepwalking in children they seem awake because their eyes would be open but they are not alert and don’t respond to directions also, so in such cases it is advisable not to awaken the sleepwalking children but to lead them quietly to their bedroom and try to make them fall asleep. It is also advisable to keep the bedrooms clutter free, especially toys or any breakable items should be removed. Parents should also keep doors and windows locked at night; make the sleepwalking children sleep on the ground floors and on low beds rather than bunkers for fear of falling down. It is advisable to hang a bell on the door knobs or have some alarm system fixed that would alert the parents. ‘Baby gates’ can also be installed at stairways if the sleepwalking children sleep on the upper floors of the houses.
