Depending on where it is located on your body will determine the type of treatment needed. Let's take a quick look at the two different types.
Scalp Ringworm
In the United States alone, 3-8% of the population has scalp ringworm. Many do not even know they have it. It affects children between the ages of 4-14 the most. Diabetics and cancer patients are more prone than any other group in getting int. It is important to note that the ringworm in the scalp is not the same as it is on your body. What is the cure for ringworm in the scalp?
Although there are times when scalp ringworm will heal itself without any kind of treatment, a visit with a doctor is advisable. The usual course of action is to shampoo your hair with shampoo that contain selenium sulfide (2.5%) or zinc pyrithione (2.0%) daily. This will reduce the ringworm spores. You can buy shampoo with these ingredients in any store. These shampoo's include Selsun Blue and Selsun Gold for Women. Head & Shoulders is also another shampoo with these ingredients.
In addition to this treatment, a doctor may prescribe an oral steroid as a cure for scalp ringworm in severe cases.
Body Ringworm
Body ringworm is really quite common. It is estimated that 20-30% of the population have the risk in developing body ringworm during their life. What is the cure for ringworm on the body? Again, there are times when it will heal itself. Other times it will require treatment. If you only have one or two places where the ringworm exists, then you can usually treat it at home. The standard treatment involves the use of an over-the-counter cream containing miconazole or clotrimazole. These ingredients can be found in Monistat, Micatin, Lotrimin, and Mycelex. The area should be treated for at least two weeks, or at least one week after healing.
If you have a more severe case of ringworm you will need to see a doctor. They may prescribe one of several different topical creams. The doctor may also prescribe a topical corticosteroid to help with the itching. In the most severe cases, surgical drainage may be required, however, this is rare.
This type of ringworm is highly contagious, although scalp ringworm is also contagious. Avoid touching the area, or sharing towels with anyone. Even though it can be uncomfortable and unsightly, you can rest easier in knowing there is a cure for ringworm.
