Coughing is an action the body takes to get rid of substances that are irritating the air passages. Coughs can be either acute or chronic. Acute coughs begin suddenly and usually last no more than 2 to 3 weeks. Acute coughs are the kind you most often get with a cold or flu. Chronic coughs last longer than 2 to 3 weeks. Coughing may also be used for psychological or social reasons, such as the coughing before giving a speech. Causes of chronic cough include smoking asthma and allergies. Coughing is a reflex that keeps your throat and airways clear.
An infusion of adathoda leaves is very effective in curing cough and cold. Collect a few adathoda leaves, clean them and fry them with honey. Add piper longum powder, taxus baccata powder and licorice powder 4 gm each to these leaves. Now add 500 ml water and let it boil and reduce to 150 ml. Remove from heat and let it cool. 50 ml of this infusion is taken three times a day. Prepare the infusion afresh each day. This infusion helps in curing cough and cold.
For the relief of a dry cough, try soaking seven almond kernels in water overnight. The following morning remove the skin from them and grind them well to form a paste. Mix the paste with twenty grams of butter and sugar. Administer orally, once in the morning and once in the evening.
There are many recommended herbal drinks to treat a cough. One remedy is boiling coltsfoot in water with garlic and brown sugar. An infusion made of coltsfoot leaves sweetened with honey is also said to do the trick. Another treatment is syrup made by boiling coltsfoot leaves with equal amounts of plantain leaves and honey. An herbal drink for coughs was based on a mix of dried sage, honey and vinegar.
Almonds are useful for dry coughs. Soak seven kernels of almonds overnight and remove the brown skin. Make a fine paste out of it. Add 20gms of butter and sugar to the paste. This paste can be taken in the morning and evening for good relief from dry cough.
Lemon is very effective for chronic cough. You can add several dashes of white or black pepper to a sliced lemon and to take its juices to relieve yourself from constant coughing. You can do this thrice each day or until you feel more relieved. Consuming grapes is also one easy yet effective alternative, since grapes act as a natural expectorant. If you feel that a cough is about to start, gargle several times each day with salt and water. Make sure that the water is salty enough before gargling, as this will make the mucus easier to cough out. Carrot juice is also best served warm rather than cold throughout the day.
