Reverse osmosis removes impurities from water using a system that forces the water through a membrane with tiny holes. This process has become more popular lately. The effect that it has on the water depends on a couple of things. First, if the water is badly contaminated, it may not be as easy as you think. However, water that looks really bad may not be as contaminated as you would think.
Once the water goes through the membrane it is sent to a storage unit. This is where it stays separate from the water that has not gone through the process. The excess water that did not make it through the membrane goes to a holding tank to be disposed of.
The naturally occurring materials in water may make it taste bad or smell. The water may have an unnatural color. If this is the case, it can be treated. Sometimes the bad water is the result of something that got into the water and contaminated it. The reverse osmosis system is designed to decrease solids that have dissolved in water. It also catches solids that have become trapped in the water and keeps them from going through to the water that is being cleaned.
Many of the elements found in water are naturally occurring elements. One such impurity is antimony. This is found naturally in soil and surface water and is thought that it may come from weathering rocks. Another popular belief is that it could come from industrial plants because it is used in some ceramics, batteries, and fireworks. So this could end up in the water from a number of different sources. Some of the side effects of this element have been known for a number of years. It can decrease your life span, in studies conducted on laboratory animals; it changed the cholesterol blood levels and glucose.
Another impurity that can contaminate the water that we drink is arsenic. Everyone has heard of arsenic but why would it be in water? Arsenic has been found in groundwater and surface water, thought to have been a naturally occurring source and from industrial plants, including smelting, pesticides, and disposal by industrial companies.
The market for household water treatment is increasing constantly. In 2005, an estimate for the use of water treatment products for household use was $2.6 billion dollars. Reverse osmosis was number one in the market and activated carbon filtration was second. Because of the increased fears of biological terrorism, water supplies have been one thing that many people have been thinking of protecting. This may be the reason for the increased interest in treating drinking water.
The best thing to do is have your water tested to determine what type of treatment you need for what purpose you intend to use the water. Different requirements are needed for drinking water, laundry, cooking, or watering plants. This will tell you what type of system you need.
