If you have recently been diagnosed by your doctor as having high blood pressure then you are no doubt looking for ways in which you can begin to lower it to normal levels. In most cases a doctor will prescribe blood pressure medication in order to help control and lower your blood pressure. However, more and more people are turning to complementary methods to lower blood pressure naturally.
The medication prescribed by a doctor is aiming to reduce the blood pressure of the patient as quickly, but as safely as possible. However, as these medications are generally short term solutions there can be negative side effects.
However, the conditions that can occur if high blood pressure goes untreated can be grave, so medication prescribed by the doctor should not be ignored, as generally it can work faster than most natural alternatives.
Some doctors, along with prescribing medication may also discuss dietary and lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risk of high blood pressure and also reduce the dependence on blood pressure meds.

Interestingly, one of the most overlooked methods to naturally reduce blood pressure is through exercise. The exercise does not need to be strenuous, just regular and for long enough and vigorous enough to elevate the heart rate. A word of warning: If a person is overweight, or they have not exercised for a while it is worth getting a physical exam before starting an exercise regime.
Exercise will help lower blood pressure, and also help with weight loss, which in turn helps lower the risk of hypertension.
Amending your diet is also normally recommended and the first thing that you will need to do when changing your dietary habits is to reduce the amount of salt/sodium consumed, as salt and sodium actually contribute to make the condition much worse.
Instead of using salt to flavor your meals try some natural herbs such as oregano, garlic, mint, thyme, rosemary or some spices such as cayenne.
Also, especially consider using more garlic than normal as studies have shown it has properties that have been found to be very beneficial in the treatment of high blood pressure.
Secondly you will need to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in your diet. You should be consuming between 5 and 8 servings of fruit and vegetables (combined) each day. For instance this may consist of 3 servings of 3 different fruits and 5 servings of different vegetables each day.
This change in diet will increase all the necessary nutrients, minerals and vitamins that your body needs to work optimally. Especially choose those vegetables and fruits that have high levels of potassium, calcium and magnesium within them, as these minerals have been shown to help regulate blood pressure.
Choose green leafy vegetables such as spinach and lettuce, also broccoli, cauliflower and carrots are extremely beneficial for the health of the body. Include fruits like apples, oranges, lemons and limes as well as bananas, as they contain all the necessary nutrients, minerals and vitamins our bodies need especially Vitamin C and potassium.
Often just by making dietary changes and adding exercise into the day it can be enough to lower blood pressure naturally to normal levels.
