Picture yourself at 65 or 70 years old. How do you see yourself? Do you envision a vibrant, energized elder person, or do you see someone in poor health that cannot walk up and down the stairs? I think most people hope to see someone with a lot of life left in them; I know I do. Just like saving for retirement, if you want to ensure good health in the years to come you have to make the right investments now.

Far too many people believe that the only reason for taking care of themselves now is to improve the way they look today. While this is one of the benefits of living a healthy life, you are also creating good habits that will hopefully sustain your health down the road. Others argue that they do not have to change their diets or habits because they are genetically blessed and do not gain weight easily, no matter what they eat. Outward appearances can be deceiving.

Think about that person you know who drives a nice car and wears nice clothes. You might assume they are making good money and will not have to worry about finances when it comes time to retire. However, they could be leasing their nice car, or may be in so much debt they do not even know where to start. When it comes time for this person to retire they will not have the funds to live off of for 15 or 20 years.

In the same way, those who do not take care of their health now will be unable to enjoy life later. Even if they do live to see old age, their health status will not allow them to be active and fully engaged with life.

There are small things you can do to increase your chances of good health later in life. Start by improving your diet. Studies have shown that people who follow the Mediterranean diet of colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy oils have the longest life spans.

Obesity in people who are over 100 years old just does not exist. If you are planning to live this long, work on getting and keeping the extra weight off, especially in the belly area where excess weight contributes more to heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The good news is, just like saving for retirement, it is never too late to start being more healthy. Determine one small step you can take this week to improve your life... and do it!

Soft Drinks: America’s Other Drinking Problem
By: Eileen Silva | 09/10/2007 | Business
Do you stagger out of bed in the morning, bleary-eyed and sleepy, stumble to the fridge, and grab a carbonated drink to get you going? Does your mid-morning break consist of a cold can from the vending machine to boost you out of your mid-morning slump? If so, you may be one of the many Americans who consume as much of their daily liquid in soft drinks as they do in water, milk, and tea combined.

The Mediterranean Diet is Also About Portions
By: Emilia Klapp, R.D., B.S. | 25/01/2008 | Alternative Medicine
As many of us know, the virtues of the Mediterranean cuisine reside in the selection of its basic elements: fruits and vegetables, grains, fish and seafood, olive oil and red wine in moderation. But are we aware that a very important element of this diet is the portion sizes?

You Don't Have to Suffer While Living
By: Lori Jones | 20/07/2008 | Nutrition
We all will move on from this life, while we are present in this life we can avoid much of the suffering; the suffering that accompanies our life is rarely necessary. The increase of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and even arthritis as well as a host of many other common ailments can often be avoided, cured or greatly decreased by getting back to the basics and embracing nature rather than overcoming it.

Why Healthy People Need a Vitamin Supplement
By: Ronald Godlewski | 01/11/2007 | Health
Why would one consider taking a supplement? To answer this type of question we need to examine our lives over the long term. Many of the most serious types of illness, the ones that are debilitating such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, do not occur overnight. They are the result of long processes that occur over years. What is frightening is that we dont recognize the symptoms until the disease has progressed.

Big Changes Start Small
By: Rachel Lukasavige | 02/07/2008 | Nutrition
My message has always been that health changes do not have to be (and probably should not be) drastic to be effective. Many people assume that to improve their health they must spend five days a week at the gym and cut all foods out of their diet that they love. By making this assumption you may be setting yourself up for failure.

What Would You Do With Four Hours?
By: Rachel Lukasavige | 30/04/2008 | Time Management
How many times have you made the excuse that you do not have time to eat healthy, exercise, or even get control of your finances? I admit that I am guilty of doing this; especially with the things I am not crazy about in the first place. One of the biggest reasons for our “lack of time” is the TV. A recent study done by Nielson shows that the average American household now has more TVs than people, and we are spending more than a third of our day with them turned on.

Warm weather seems like it is finally here to stay, and with that comes outdoor activities that you can now enjoy on a much more frequent basis. It is the perfect time of year for one of my favorite activities, bike riding. This means that it is also a good time for a reminder about wearing a bike helmet. Wearing a bike helmet can reduce injury by up to 88%, and reduces injury to the face by 65%. You should have no excuse not to wear one.
