If you’ve recently traveled by air, you might have seen an ad in the in-flight magazine for the ROM cross trainer that promises a complete workout in 4 minutes. And if that didn’t immediately catch your attention, then maybe its $14,615 price tag, prominently posted at the top of the page, did. ROMFab, the company that manufactures the ROM cross trainer seems just as unabashed about the ROM machine’s price as it does about the eyebrow raising claims of a complete workout in a mere 4 minutes.
So is it worth almost $15,000? That answer depends on a few factors. Firstly, does it work? Secondly, could you achieve the same results for less money? Thirdly, what about the time factor?
Without trying the machine out in person, it is difficult to judge whether or not the machine works. But we can look towards the company’s longevity. On the ROM cross trainer’s website fastexercise.com it says that the ROM machine has been manufactured since 1990. It’s pretty impressive that they have been in business that long, considering that the claims the ROM machine’s distributor makes still seem outlandish, even almost 20 years later. Additionally, there is a link to the Better Business Bureau’s Rating on ROMFab, the ROM cross trainer’s distributor. At time of publication, the rating was an A+, which the BBB defines as an exemplary rating, stating that nothing in their files causes them to have any doubt about the company’s reliability. One could conclude that if the company wasn’t producing a product that fulfilled its advertising claims, that it probably wouldn’t be able to operate for almost 20 years without some consumer complaints. Additionally, owner testimonials for the machine can be found at the website, and although a few owners also grouse about the machine’s price, they conclude that it is worth it for what they get.
Could the same results be achieved for less money? The answer to this question is simple: yes. And ROMFab seems to admit this on their website. In the third question of their Q&A section, they address how the ROM machine gives you the same results that you would expect from a 45 to 90 minute exercise session. For the price of a ROM cross trainer, you could purchase a treadmill for cardio, some free weights for strength training, and still have money to spare, perhaps to pay a personal trainer to help you train on your home equipment. Alternately, you could get a gym membership. So you definitely could get the same fitness results for less money.
