If you are a person who is really bugged about wearing contact lenses or glasses, you may be pretty curious on knowing what a lasik eye surgery is. Which is one of the latest procedures to correct vision problems? Well, lets get a clear picture of what a lasik eye surgery is, Lasik is a surgery, which is made in the most delicate part of the eye that is the cornea.
Lasik is the most frequently performed surgery in the eye and is abbreviated as, "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis" and it is called a refractive surgery procedure, where a refractive surgery is a surgery that corrects visual acuity with the objective of reducing or eliminating the need for glasses which includes radial keratotomy, prk, myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, and corneal implants.
Why do you think that the lasik laser surgery is the most popular and frequently used surgery procedure, well the reason being it has various advantages like a complete lack of pain after the surgery and for a fact that good vision is achieved the very next day?
The instrument that is used in the lasik laser surgery is called microkeratome and it is a small instrument that a lasik surgeon uses to cut the cornea and to create a thin circular flap around the cornea.
Well if you are seriously looking to undergo a lasik laser surgery, the first thing that you should do is to select a good lasik surgeon, Select the surgeon based on his track record. After that the person undergoing the surgery will be asked to stop wearing contact lenses at least for 10 to 15 days, then the thickness of the cornea is examined and an antibiotic is prescribed accordingly to prevent infection after the surgery.
Patients are usually given some antibiotics after the lasik laser surgery, and the lasik surgeon prescribes a pair of dark goggles to prevent the patient from rubbing the lasik eyes.
The most important thing is that the lasik surgeon should explain all the potential risks involved in doing the surgery, the complete pros and cons of the lasik eye should be told to the patient before performing the lasik laser surgery by the surgeon. This includes corneal infection, discomfort or pain, scratchiness, dryness etc…
After this, if your lasik surgeon does not think that lasik eye is right for you, try to take a second opinion and if it is also the same then adapt to the one you find to be the best.

40 years old. not 100% after PRK (-0.75) . Retreatment or keep it like this?
By: tslh | 09-07-2008
I got PRK surgery and I'm quite happy with the results: I came from -8.75, cylinder 1.50 and now I'm -0.75. Now I can do a retreatment and end up beeing a perfect zero (I hope) but I read different stories: some people say that, at my age, it's better to keep my eyes the way they are so I won't be needing reading glasses soon. According to them your eyes get 'better' (or more toward zero) when you get older. So, should I be happy with that little 'gap' so I have some 'space' towards zero? Or is this story untrue/not relevant?
