Leucoderma

Leucoderma is a rare skin disease characterized by white spots and patches. In this distressful but not contagious disease, there is a gradual loss of pigment called melanin from the dermal layers that results into white patches. Leucoderma may begin with a small patch but slowly and steadily spreads throughout the body. The actual cause is still not known though several studies have been conducted on the subject. Some of the perceived causes are emotional stress, hereditary factors, worms, sunburns and physical illness.

What causes Leucoderma is still not known. Despite advanced research, medicine is still trying to figure out the exact cause of Leucoderma. There are numerous theories as to what could cause this disease. To-date three theories have been widely accepted. The first theory is one of mistaken identity states that the immune system mistakes the pigment cells for foreign bodies and destroys them. The second theory says that certain chemical agents destroy the pigment generating cells.

The third theory, on the other hand, suggests that the cells are destroyed due to chemical exposure. Whatever the cause, the course of the disease is certain which is the destruction of pigment cells. But why do only certain areas or parts of the body get affected? Despite of the fact that pigments cells are present throughout the body then why doesn’t this disease affect the entire body is still a mystery. However, there are many health experts who believe that the main causes of leucoderma are excessive mental stress.

Chronic or acute gastric diseases can contribute to Leucoderma. People who have impaired hepatic function as in jaundice, worm infestations or other parasite infestations in the alimentary canal are prone to have those white patches. White patches need not always spell doom as only a fraction of them could be the dreaded Leucoderma. A majority of the cases including why Leucoderma spots are white are amenable to medical management.

Symptoms of Leucoderma may include loss of hair, premature graying of hair and white patches. The whiteness generally appears as a small discolored white/pale or brown spot that later spreads in size. The spots become whiter day-after-day and finally become milky white. There might be general weakness and lassitude and a victim may have sensitivity towards cold. The patches or marks can be caused due to plenty of reasons; the most common among them are worm infestation and/or calcium deficiencies. These patches may produce lot of psychological stress in the victim.

Noteworthy is the fact that Leucoderma can not be caused by consuming contrasting food items like fish/onions with milk. Vitamin-C rich foods, which were once thought to promote the disorder process, are no longer restricted either. Several researches proved their beneficial role as antioxidants.

The general population is at a risk of 1-2 % to develop leucoderma. Considering if the Leucoderma is hereditary, we’ll come to know that children of parents where one or both have Leucoderma are only at a fraction of a higher risk than the general population. The researches show that even with no family history for generations, any normal and fit person too stands a chance of developing Leucoderma. White patches need not always spell doom as only a fraction of them could be the dreaded Leucoderma.

A majority of the cases including why Leucoderma spots are white are amenable to medical management. To confirm whether a white patch is Leucoderma or not, they have an outline darker than the skin, must be irregular in appearance, gradually increase in size and appear milky white under an ultraviolet light.

Leucodermal conditions have huge psycho-social impact. No age is exempt and genetic re-disposition is there. The most affected areas of the disease include the hands, the neck, the back and the wrists in the order. The condition does not cause any harm to the body organs. Individuals need to let their doctors know if they are feeling depressed. Doctors and other mental health professionals should be able to help patients deal with depression.

• Exposure to intense ultraviolet light e.g. UVB therapy
• Medicines taken by mouth e.g trimethylpsoralen
• Medicines applied to the skin like Corticosteroid creams, Immunosuppressants or Repigmenting agents.

Skin may be grafted or removed from normal areas and placed into the areas of Vitiligo. In the future, skin pigment cells may be grown in the laboratory and used to treat affected parts. In mild cases, vitiligo pale marks can be hidden with concealing products or other cosmetic camouflage solutions. If the affected person is pale-skinned, the patches can be made less visible by avoiding sunlight. However, exposure to sunlight may also cause the melanocytes to regenerate the pigment.

Vitiligo (http://www.curevitiligooil.com/Vitiligo.html ) is a disorder with complex causes. People with vitiligo seem to inherit a genetic predisposition for the disorder. The disorder can be brought on by a variety of precipitating causes. Many people report that their vitiligo first appeared following a traumatic or stressful event. The primary symptom of the disorder is the loss of skin color. Hair growing from the affected areas also lacks color. In addition, individuals may have pigment abnormalities of the retina or iris of the eyes. Once it is diagnosed, Vitiligo treatment becomes indispensable. It is important to combat the other disorders that Vitiligo brings along.

Extreme cases of Vitiligo can be unattractive and may affect an individual’s outlook and social interactions. Sometimes the best treatment for this particular disorder is no treatment at all. Fair-skinned individuals should avoid tanning of normal skin because the no-pigment white skin of Vitiligo has no natural protection from sun. Hence, these areas are easily sunburned, and sufferers have an increased risk to skin cancer. Avoid the sun as much as you can especially when it is most intense to avoid burns.

Disguising Vitiligo with make-up, self-tanning compounds or dyes is an easy way to make it less noticeable. Cosmetics can be used to improve the appearance of the exposed white areas. Use sunscreens for the parts that can not be covered as they prevent burning of the affected areas. Skin creams and oral medications are available for severe cases. Make sure while choosing creams as they may have side effects which may make these patches undesirable. If sunscreens and cover-ups are not satisfactory, consult your doctor as he may recommend other treatment.

Autologous transplantation, depigmentation of skin and repigmentation therapies are other options for those who are severely affected. However, the choice of therapy depends on the number of pale/white patches and how widespread they are. It may also be suggested depending on the patient’s preference for treatment. Each individual with Vitiligo responds differently to therapy, and a particular treatment may not work for everyone. These therapies can be used along with surgical or medical treatments. Current treatment options are medical, surgical, and adjunctive therapies.

For some patients with sever cases, the most practical treatment for vitiligo is to remove remaining pigment from normal skin. This makes the whole body an even white color. Alternatively, some people with the disorder opt for chemical depigmentation. It is done with a chemical called monobenzylether of hydroquinone and takes about a year to complete. This process is irreversible and generally ends up with complete or mostly complete depigmentation. In Children, the Vitiligo treatment is generally done by suggesting sunscreen and cover-up measures.

Repigmentation Therapies are done through topical Corticosteroids. Creams containing corticosteroid compounds can be effective in returning pigment to small areas of affected skin. These agents can thin the skin and hence, should be used under dermatologist’s care. Besides treating the skin, attention should be paid to the psychological well-being of the individual.
