Before you get too involved with planning the date of your liposuction, make sure you have done your homework. Many people do not realize some of the greater risks of liposuction. Despite the fact that the industry has become better developed and most of the risks have been reduced, they have not been eliminated, and being aware of them ahead of time is a good way to educate yourself before you sign the papers.

If you are not good at dealing with pain there are a few things you need to consider. First of all, while the operation itself should not be excruciatingly painful, you will still experience discomfort and pain for days or weeks after the operation. Secondly, since the operation will take place close to some of your internal organs, you could experience internal bruising afterwards. You may also have a tendency to develop scars where the tube was inserted into your skin.

Some of the more extreme risks include things like irregularities in the contour of your skin, excess skin that requires you to get a lift, and even death. Though the chances of death are slim, and have been reduced to approximately 3 deaths per 100,000 recipients of liposuction, they do happen, and there is a risk of overdosing on the medication you are given after the operation.

Irregularities occur when the areas where fat cells were removed do not settle evenly, resulting in uneven bumps under the skin. This can be remedied by having another procedure done, but that is even more costly than the first time. Excess skin is common when liposuction is done under the chin and it will appear as extra flaps of skin where there was fat before. These can be remedied by further cosmetic surgery such as a face-lift, but once again you are adding to the original cost of the operation.

There is also a possibility of longer lasting effects, such as heart problems and problems with some of your other internal organs due to some of the ultrasonic and vacuum devices used during the operation. These are often harder to combat than the other risks, and they could lead to you needing medication for the rest of your life, or even more serious surgery. While this is certainly not the majority of cases, it is definitely something to consider if you know that you have a family history of heart troubles or other problems with your kidneys, liver, or other organs.

Your physician should discuss all of these risks with you before you make your final decision, but if not, it is better to be aware of them beforehand. If you have any questions about these risks of you should ask your physician for more information about them and how they relate specifically to you. By asking questions and educating yourself before you decide to go through with the operation you will be much more likely to have a successful recovery, or find a better way to reach your goals.
