For thousands of years people have relied on natural cures for healing. Through fruits, vegetables and herbs, people found natural health food was one of the most effective ways to not only cure a whole host of ailments, but also help the body maintain a natural balance. While modern medicine has made incredible strides and should not be discounted, the benefits of the natural route should not be forgotten either.

Almost everyone understands the importance of a balanced, healthy diet. Without the proper vitamins and minerals, a body cannot function correctly and efficiently. A diet that lacks in certain nutrients can actually lead to illness. So, it really should not come as a big surprise that foods and herbs, too, can heal.

There are literally hundreds of different herbs and foods that have curative properties along with their basic nutritional values. In fact, many modern medicines derive some of their basic ingredients from plants and herbs. Just about any illness or complaint can be matched up with an herb that might help address the problem.

Here are some of the common herbs used for healing a whole host of ailments. Their effectiveness, of course, will vary.

Rose hips: This is the part of the flower that remains when the petals fall off of a rose. This can be found in tea and even in some vitamins. Because it's high in vitamin C, it's a great course for obtaining this vitamin.

Chamomile: Commonly added to tea, this herb is known for its calming powers. It is also believed to assist with stomach problems and can fight certain infections. Many people swear by chamomile tea to help them relax after a stressful day.

Ginseng: This herb is thought to boost the immune system. It's used in teas and other drinks. It is also believed to perk up stamina levels. The fact it has a great flavor doesn't hurt.

Spearmint: Great in candy, this is wonderful for indigestion and other stomach ailments.

Garlic: It may scare off vampires, but it's also one of nature's little wonders. Garlic is a natural antibiotic that also has some antiviral properties. It's been shown to help lower cholesterol and can help prevent blood clots, as well.

Licorice: This is known to help sore throats, as evidenced by its popularity as a cough drop flavor, and even stomach ulcers. It's not recommended in large doses.

Goldenseal: This is also a natural antibiotic. It's used in teas.

Oatmeal: Oatmeal is known for its ability to help lower cholesterol. It's considering a very good part of a healthy diet. Whether it's in muffins, cereal or added to other recipes, it's a good choice.

This is just a sampling of the natural curatives available in the world. Remember that many natural cures have been proven by science to help the body in its healing process. In fact, many major pharmaceuticals today use natural herbs and foods in their ingredients along with chemicals. Natural healing, when possible, is almost always the better route to go.
