Nausea - Controlling Travel Illness

Nausea is the uneasy and uncomfortable feeling that arises from the stomach. Nausea can result from certain drugs. Nausea comes to a person whenever one comes across a dirty and unhygienic place. Nausea can also occur if a person is traveling in a fast driven car to a hill station through a zigzag road. While in the former instance nausea is a natural means of protest by the person's subconscious mind to the surroundings, in the latter nausea can be the result of the puzzlement in our mind (brain) as to the perceived and the actual moment. Moreover, in the second example, nausea can result easily if the traveler just had a heavy meal. The full tummy finds the sudden twists and turns rather difficult to digest, to say the least.

More often than not, the feeling of nausea is accompanied by the sudden urge to vomit. Nausea arises from the stomach. The post-nausea phase is characterized by general fatigue, loss of appetite and at times headache. Though nausea in itself may not be a disease yet it can be the probable symptom of several ailments which may be apparently lying silent. What is more, notwithstanding the fact that nausea rises from within the tummy, the discomfort can also be the sign of diseases that are not at all related to the stomach or the gastrointestinal sections.
Pregnant women commonly report of the nausea feeling, which is but a normal and a natural effect of the woman going the nature's way. Nausea can also happen in the post-anesthesia period and also while one is undergoing certain chemotherapy treatments. Short-term nausea phases are harmless but if the feeling of nausea continues for a prolonged phase, then the doctor must be consulted.

Long-term nausea feelings can degenerate into Celiac Disease. Nausea accompanied by long and repeated bouts of vomiting can cause a slide in the person's electrolyte level. Such a state can lead to acute dehydration. Immediately provide the patient intravenous or oral electrolyte solutions. The best rehydration means is hygienic drinking water. It is simpler and safer too.

Experts opine that the root cause of nausea is located elsewhere than the stomach. The centre controlling equilibrium in human beings is actually located between the ears. Nausea takes place whenever there is little concert between the ears and the eyes. The sense of equilibrium works in close concert with the eyes and the brain. But, this theory explains only a part of the problem. While acute dislocation in the equilibrium unit can explain the cause of travel sickness, it does not provide the link for the condition of nausea arising from the tummy. It also fails to analyze as to why a person feels nausea when he/she comes across a disoriented scene or a shabby and unsanitary locale.
