The effects of smoking are many and quite varied. The habit is blamed for everything from the premature aging of the smoker, to higher rates of infant mortality. These in addition to one of the most well known effects of smoking, the greatly increased risk of lung cancer. The risk doesn't stop with you however. The chemical stew flows into the air around you and it isn't any less dangerous there. Smoking actually puts the people around you at risk as well.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have quite a list of direct effects of smoking. The long list of ailments includes everything from 'reproductive effects', and cardiovascular diseases, to leukemia. They know that smoking can be responsible for causing more than ten types of cancer. Causing cancer everywhere from the mouth and throat, to the stomach and bladder. It is not a wonder that so many people die each year from the effects of smoking.

The list of adverse effects of cigarette smoking don't stop with just the smoker themselves. It is becoming known that being around second hand smoke can bring on just about all the same effects of smoking cigarettes as actually smoking yourself. Extended exposure to cigarette smoke could bring on pneumonia or even any of the cancers smoking can potentially cause. Children are at extra risk as well. Being around second hand smoke puts the child at risk of suffering decreased lung growth. Infants are at an increased risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) if they are exposed to cigarettes.

If these were the sole effects of cigarette smoking, not a single person would ever smoke. While causing all the horrible diseases and disorders above there is a reason people keep coming back. Smoking a cigarette provides a way to get nicotine into the body quickly. Nicotine, while being just one of the thousands of chemicals and combustion by-products that come from cigarettes, is a stimulant. This is the substance that everyone who has tried to quit, or finally quit, cravings.

The cravings are the manifestation of another of the more famous, or infamous rather, effects of smoking. Everyone has to know by know, cigarettes are addictive. In feeding their habit smokers can get up to consuming one or two whole packs every day. From twenty to as many as fifty individual cigarettes per day. The addiction has grown to the point where they really can't go very long at all before they need another cigarette.

The effects of cigarette smoking are mostly horrible for your health. However quitting won't only help you. It will improve the health of the people around you that you care for.

DVT and Coumadin
By: Monique | 19-10-2008
I had my blood drawn three days ago for my routine (monthly) PT-INR test.  I am on Warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner, for the rest of my life. When I took the bandage off afterwards I noticed that the area of the injection looked like a bubble and had turned black. Now the area is very sore (seems like the whole arm) and the area is very bruised. Should I be worried about this? Is it safe for me to be on this blood thinner forever? I have seen multiple vascular surgeons, hematologists and doctors and they all say that I have no choice. I have permanent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in my left leg.
