Ohio Board of Nursing

The Ohio Board of Nursing is a federal agency lawfully established by the Ohio state supervising in the legally recognized practice of the nursing profession in Ohio.

As with the other states, the Ohio State Board of Nursing, actively promotes and protects the health of the citizens in their jurisdiction through the safe and effective practice of nursing as defined by the laws of Ohio. Ohio board of nursing licensure is tasked to regulate the safe and effective practice of all nurses in Ohio. In fact this is the sworn mission of the Board.

The objectives of the Ohio Board of Nursing also include working towards measurable ends which consist of creating competent nurse practitioners, keeping the public health-informed, and establishing a law which accurately reflects the dynamic practice of nursing. Additionally, the Ohio Board of Nursing serves specified important functions.

As authorized by the Ohio law, ohio board of nursing license is accepted in dealing with the formation of standards for pre-licensure nursing educational programs and dialysis technician training programs; the establishment of requirements for licensure or certification of nursing applicants; the issuance of license to beginning, qualified registered nurses and licensed practical nurses and certificates to qualified dialysis technicians; the issuance of certificates of authority to qualified certified nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and clinical nurse specialists, as well as to prescribe drugs and therapeutic devices to certified nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and clinical nurse specialists; renewal of licenses and certificates, the establishment of the standards for continuing education (CE), the formulary for nurses with prescriptive authority, the standards for the advanced pharmacology course required to obtain prescriptive authority, and the standards of safe patient care provided by licensed nurses and dialysis technicians; also, investigation of alleged violations of the nurse practice act; acting out disciplining action those who do not practice according to prevailing standards of safe care or who violate other provisions of the nurse practice act; and finally affording alternatives to discipline through the Alternative Program for Chemical Dependency and the Practice Intervention and Improvement Program (PIIP).

All these: to encourage early intervention and treatment or improvement in order to prevent harm to the health of the public by protecting patients from unsafe practice by nurses and dialysis technicians.

Ohio physical therapy board though doesn't have any authority in issues involving the employment nature of nursing / dialysis care, the facilities in which nurses practice, or other concerns relating to the profession as a whole. Still, the Ohio Board of Nursing is funded by the fervent fees of their qualified and competent licensees and certificate-holders so the Board may implement the lawful regulation of the nursing practice all across Ohio.
