If you have always thought you had an overeating problem you might want to think again. New research and real life case studies are proving that regular overeating of your favorite foods is not something to feel guilty about, it is something you MUST do to keep your weight loss going.
Okay, go ahead and challenge me on this one and I will have to agree with you. Overeating day after day after day does cause you to gain weight but if you learn the simple strategy of adding a strategic "Cheat Day" to your normal dieting week you will see how periodic overeating is what your body needs to continue it's fat burning potential.
Here is why dieting does not work.
When you restrict your calories (i.e. go on a diet) your body senses there is a problem. It doesn't understand that you are voluntarily eating less in order to lose your extra belly fat or shrink your thighs, it tends to think that you are entering a period of semi-starvation and it takes actions to protect you.
These actions are exactly opposite of what you want to happen when you are on a diet. After even one week of strict dieting your metabolism plummets (as much as 50%) in order for you to preserve your stored energy (i.e. FAT). In other words when you diet your body grabs hold of body fat and hangs on for dear life.
As if that were not bad enough, your body also ups it's production of the abdominal fat storing hormone, cortisol and the hunger stimulating hormone, ghrelin. Yes, that's right, go on a diet and expect a body that more easily makes belly fat and that becomes ravenously hungry. This is why diets don't (can't!) work.
Here is why overeating works!
So in order to lose weight you must find a way to lose that does not crash your metabolism and doesn't stimulate fat storage and hunger. This is accomplished by overeating.
You see before you started to diet your metabolism was functioning at full capacity, this was because your body sensed that you were getting enough to eat. As soon as you started to diet your body started sending out red flags thinking you were starving and essentially shutting down your fat burning potential.
So you must boost your metabolism back up to pre-diet status every week by overeating for one of those days. By eating a lower calorie diet for 6 days and then on day 7 eating all of your favorite high-carb, high-fat foods (yes, things like pizza, burgers, fries, milkshakes, etc.) you convince your body that there is no problem what-so-ever and up goes your metabolism.
What you thought was an overeating problem becomes the overeating solution!
And don't worry that you will be destroying all of the hard work you put into dieting for 6 days. Research shows that your metabolism rebounds faster than your body's ability to lay down fat from your cheat day. This means right after your cheat day you are burning fat with extremely high efficiency and that ability stays higher for the entire week until your next day off.
So do you have an overeating problem? Well not if you learn when to overeat, then it actually becomes an asset in your weight loss journey. Science and real life before and after photos prove it works but I urge you to prove it to yourself.
