There is a serious question concerning parents with autism. How does the behavior of their child change as he or she ages? This is a concern not only in the United States, but global also. Every parent is optimistic that their child will maintain a healthy behavior as they grow older, so they able to manage and function on their own, in our society.
Autism is a complicated disorder, that affects about 1 in every 100 persons currently. The symptoms vary from person to person, but most people report similar behaviors, including difficulty communicating with the outside world, obsessive tendencies, self inflicted harmful behaviors, and lack of eye contact. Treatments for autism are still being searched and questioned. Because, autism is in question for treatments, it makes it controversial. Due to this fact, many behavioral disorders are given the diagnosis as autism.
Signs of autism begins in children as young as six months of age. There is an inability for children with autism to display signs of not being associated with parents who want to sooth them, and they have noticed they do not show smiles, baby talk or noises by usually age one year. As a child with autism ages, the more profound the symptoms appear, usually leading to a diagnosis that there is something wrong.
In severe cases, people classified, as having "low functioning" symptoms, with autism, will cope with this disorder throughout their entire lives. As a child ages, and becomes an adult, they are often unable to communicate, feed themselves, dress themselves, or bathe themselves. Many will be placed in facilities where long term care is needed, to take care of their day to day needs.
Well-adjusted lives of higher functioning children with autism often will lead a balanced life style. Many children may recover from their early behaviors and can function with daily routine. Obsessive tendencies that often accompany autism, can be controlled by learning behaviors that are more suitable. Some high functioning autistic children are able to attend regular public schools, but may struggle with learning. They may be able to lead average lives, have families, and function at jobs.
Many autistic people will be placed in homes that have living conditions, which are designed to assist people with autism. They may be able to hold a job, but live in a home with other autistic adults where the home is monitored by a trained person, who can assist with daily living.
Every child with autism will have personalities of their own and will display a vast range of needs that must be met, from childhood to adulthood. Outsiders would be unaware that there are many autistic children that are able to lead healthy lives because of the support from family and friends. With the advances in medical science and the research going into studying autism, there is hope our children today will be guided to lead more healthy and ordinary lives, than autistic people who are now currently adults. To answer the question, at what age do behaviors change in people with autism, it is a case by case basis that changes with each individual.
