Radix Glycyrrhizae (Licorice Root)–Chinese name GANCAO

Origin:Licorice Root

Licorice Root is the dried root and rhizome of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fishch., Glycyrrhiza inflata Bat. or Glycyrrhiza glabra L. The drug is collected in spring and autumn, removed from rootlet, dried in the sun.
Chemical Ingredients:

There is glycyrrhizin in its root and rhizoma, which is the kalium or calcium salt of glycyrrhizic acid. There are also liquiritin, liquiritigenin, isoliquiritin, isoliquiritigenin, neoliquiritin, neoisoiiquiritin, etc.
Licorice RootAction and Indications:

To reinforce the function of the spleen and replenish qi, to remove heat and counteract toxicity, to dispel phlegm and relieve cough, to alleviate spasmodic pain, and to moderate drug actions.
Place of production:

Inner mongolia, Shanxi, Gansu, Xinjiang, etc of CHINA.

Recipes of Medicated Diet:

1. Licorice root and lettuce gruel

[Ingredients]: 6g licorice root; 15g lettuce; 100g polished round-grained rice

[Preparation]: Boil the smashed lettuce and licorice root with 200ml water untile there is only 100ml water left. Extract the liquid and strain and strain the dregs. Put the liquid, polished round-grained rice and some water into a pot to boil. The porridge is done when the rice become soft and edible.

[Effect and Indications]: This recipe benefits Qi for promoting lactation. Lettuce is the dried seed of lettuce, It is bitter in taste and cold nature. It can promote lacation and relieve the syndrom of dysuria and urinary stoppage. Licorice root is sweet and neutral. It can harmonize the middle jiao, relieve aaute symptoms, harmonize the actions of other herbs. The polished round-grained rice is entitled to "the best tonic in the world", The combination of the three is a very good recipe for promoting lactation.

2. Mutton stewed with licorice root

[Ingredients]: 10g Licorice root; 10g tsaoko; 300g mutton; a small amount of sugarcane and radish; milet wine and soy sauce as needed.

[Preparation]: Cut the mutton into pieces. Boil the mutton with radish to remove the unappealing smell of mutton. Plce the sugarcane into the pot first, then mutton, licorice root, tsaoko, millet wine and soy sauce. Noil over strong fire, five minutes after the boiling, simmer for one hour and a half and then it is done.

[Effect and Indications]:Warmly invigorating spleen, building up physique. Spleen deficiency, poor consitution, cold limbs, aversion to cold, etc.
