Reducing Anxieties Through Faith

We all have anxieties at certain times in our life. It is simply a part of the human experience. And while a certain amount of anxiety is perfectly normal and nothing to be overly concerned about, over time the stress of day-to-day life can develop into a disorder if ignored. Unfortunately, the symptoms of anxiety disorders are very often mistaken for other illnesses. For example, chest pain caused by anxiety can often be mistaken for a more serious heart problem, or even cardiac arrest.

Reducing anxieties in our day-to-day life can help to maintain balance and ensure we do not develop more serious problems or anxiety "disorders." Relaxation is considered one of the best ways to counter the effects of anxiety. Learning to relax your mind and body on a regular basis is an excellent and proactive solution. Meditating, listen to calming music, walking in nature, and using guided relaxation techniques are all proven ways of reducing anxieties.

At the root, anxiety is caused by doubt -- more commonly known as a lack of faith. Because of this, many people are able to reduce the anxieties which are present in life from time to time by reaffirming their beliefs -- whether they are religious beliefs or otherwise. For many people, their faith keeps them balanced, and promotes a more positive approach to life. So in some ways, you could say that reducing anxiety is a kind of "faith based initiative."

But while faith is an excellent place to begin the process of reducing anxieties in your life, it is important not to neglect your physical body as well. Regular exercise, fresh air and activity are all important to maintain a healthy balanced body -- and a healthy balanced mind
.
Another important factor to keep both body and mind healthy is to eat a nutritious and balanced diet. Several medical studies have found a correlation between individuals who fail to eat a balanced diet, and anxiety disorders. While the results are not conclusive at this point, it makes sense that our diet affects every part of our body, including our brains.

Staying hydrated is another important factor. Many anxiety sufferers report feeling more stressed and tense when they do not drink enough water. Nurture your body with a diet containing essential minerals, vitamins and fibers, and reduce your consumption of caffeine-based drinks like coffee or colas. Habits such as smoking and drinking can also have a detrimental effect on your nervous systems, and in turn your emotions.

Whenever you are in a state of emotional distress, it is important that you do not attempt to "go it alone." Talk to your spouse, parents, colleagues, best friend or mentor about the anxieties you're feeling. Sharing your thoughts, rather than concealing your emotions can lift the burden from your shoulders. You may even want to speak to your priest or a counselor about your anxieties. Whatever you do, don't try to handle the problem all on your own. Remember, there is strength in numbers.

Self-help techniques are also very helpful in reducing anxieties. Remember, these techniques do not have to conflict with your personal faith and religious beliefs. They can simply be used as a tool to strengthen your faith and help restore a balanced state of mind. Finding your own personal ways to relax and take care of yourself can be both rewarding and empowering. Many people take comfort from reading motivational books, Scripture, or practicing yoga.

Believe in yourself and reaffirm your faith, as faith is the one thing in life that will overcome all doubt and all fear. Anxiety is a product of our individual fears, and anything you can do to discourage doubt and fear and strengthen your faith in yourself, your family, the world and God will further the process of reducing anxieties and once again enjoying a healthy, balanced emotional life.
