Salt Intake and HBP - How Sodium Intake Affects Blood Pressure

Living with this condition is in itself a very stressful event. Not to mention its present danger, having high blood pressure is like playing a game of chess. You have to defend your territory from being captured by an enemy. In the real-life scenario, a person with hypertension is ought to be on guard with everything that the mouth munches into. One wrong food, or move as in the chess game can mean game over.

What to Watch Out

Sodium or salt intake is not as bad as it seems, if you have a normal blood pressure. But what if you are suffering or have a tendency to develop HBP? Would it still be okay to have a considerable amount of salt consumption?

Salt, as we all know it is a universal ingredient that gives taste to our food. Life is unimaginable without salt. It makes our nerves together with our muscles to perform their job well. It is also necessary in the proper maintenance of mineral and water balance inside our body. But we have to take note also that too much salt intake poses a grave threat to us because it can possibly lead to other life-threatening situations like kidney malfunctions or even stroke.

According to studies, too much sodium is a leading cause of high blood pressure and how it happens, we will know:

  • Too much sodium intake can cause an increase in the volume of blood being trapped in our blood vessels. This instance causes our heart to respond by pumping in more force for the blood to reach their proper destination. An extra effort of the heart takes its toll on the blood vessels by causing more blood pressure against it.
  • Salt can have an impact on how the arteries behave, including the arterioles, a blood vessel that control blood flow. Upon the presence of too much sodium arterioles contract rather than its normal dilating and constricting behavior. This action impedes the blood in their way back to the heart in such a manner that the volume of the blood that reaches the heart is now insufficient. As the heart reacts on this condition, it also creates an added pressure to the walls of the arteries caused by the sudden surge of blood.

There are still other effects of sodium in our system that causes our blood pressure to rise but they were still under extensive studies until this time. Other people have been proven to be more responsive to the effects of sodium in the body while others are more tolerant. One thing is for sure, excessive sodium intake makes us vulnerable to high blood pressure as we come to age.
