Many workout plans are surrounded by myths and urban legends that are passed on from one person to another, and occasionally picked up by the media. Some of the free advice in the unspecialized media can harm you more than help you.
Myth #1: The more you work out, the more pounds you’ll shed. False. This myth claims that more physical exercise is always better. However, the level of exercise is different for each person. Too much workout may not allow your body to recover from the stress and effort induced by the previous session, by the time you start a new session.
Myth #2: Never stop working out, because when you do your muscles will turn into fat. False. The worst thing that may happen when you stop working out is that muscles may shrink in size and the unburned calories are deposited around them, as well as in other spots, as fats.
Myth #3: A true workout is measured by the amount of sweating. False. It’s a proven fact that you cannot tell the intensity of a workout by the amount of sweat.
Myth #4: Sugar before physical exercise brings more energy. False. If you do that, the level of sugar in your blood will briefly increase and will also cause insulin release that may end up lowering the blood sugar below the initial level.
Myth #5: As you get older, you always gain weight. False. Your metabolism is directly related to the muscular mass, not to your age. A moderate workout a few times per week is a good way to maintain your body mass.
Myth #6: You can over-eat anything that is fat-free and you won’t gain weight if you work out. False.
Myth #7: If you drink water while exercising, you’ll get cramps. False. Cramps have nothing to do with drinking water. They are caused by the lack of water during, before, or after the workout. The discomfort may appear because you need to replace the fluid lost during the workout.
