Have you ever thought of taking up martial arts?
When you think of a martial art you think of karate or kung fu or something like that, right? Something where you're jumping in the air and high-kicking people, or breaking boards with your bare hands.
But you're at the age where you don't want to be doing that, even if you still could. And hey, maybe you still can! I'm not saying that seniors can't take up karate, or continue it if they've been involved with it for a period of time.
But for the elderly, in particular women, a more gentle form of martial art may be wanted. For something that will keep them supple, help with balance, coordination and so on, Tai Chi Chuan, or as most people call it, Tai Chi, is the way to go.
Tai Chi doesn't involve punching or kicking people. It consists of a series of movements, performed in slow motion, that impart gracefulness, suppleness, coordination, and almost if not just as important, relief from stress.
And who these days isn't suffering from stress for one reason or another?
What I'm telling you probably isn't news. Tai Chi and Yoga are two of the fastest growing fitness and health maintenance activities in the United States today.
I personally prefer Tai Chi, as it's more "active" than yoga, which seems to me to work only on suppleness and meditation... not that there's anything wrong with that. We all need to maintain our suppleness and range of movement, as far as possible.
For more information, look on the web for Tai Chi and yoga articles and instructions.
You can buy books on Tai Chi and yoga, which explain all the ins and outs and have photos showing you each movement and these are fine as reference works if you choose to do the activity in your own home.
But, before relying on those books, you really should take at least an introductory class in either Yoga or Tai Chi. An expert teacher (and you must do research to ensure that your teacher is certified to be teaching you) will be able to warn you of any ....danger isn't the right term...things to be aware of, to look out for...- you don't want to start out advanced positions in yoga, for example, that require you to put your leg behind your ear like a pretzel...you might stay like that all day! (Okay, only joking, but there are breathing techniques, for example, that can induce lightheadedness if not done correctly, and so on.)
