Travel nursing is a job in which a nurse travels to the locations they are required at. They are located there temporarily to cover up a shortage of nurses or in case of emergencies. It began in the 1980’s when a staff shortage and fluctuations were felt in the medical organisations. Nurse travel was a common phenomenon in the United States which faced a shortage of nurses.
A nurse with a minimum of one year clinical experience in one’s speciality and a license by the state of employment is eligible to become a nurse traveller. Though the eligibility requires a nurse to have an experience of one year but a nurse traveller must have a vast knowledge and experience in their specialised field because of the limited time available to them to understand the assigned task and the organisation.
Generally in medical travel nursing is based on a short term contract. This may range from 4-13 weeks and can go up to a contract of 1-2 years. A permanent job can be offered by the medical organisation at the end of the contract.
Since the nature of work is such a nurse traveller is paid more than a permanent nurse excluding the housing expense which are covered by the organisation itself. Salary may differ from area to area depending upon the location, the need of the organisation. Being a travel nurse gives one immense amount of exposure and the ability to handle different situations
Another added benefit of being on medical nurse travel is that one gets to explore new locations while one can work at the same time. One can choose the place of work they like and enjoy the place as well. Some nurses also state that this job was like a “working vacation for them”.
Indulging in a noble profession and at the same time fulfilling you own desires of having a good paying job and exploring new places is only offered by the medical nurse travel industry.
