Technological Advances in the Field of Medicine

The advancements of technology in the field of medicine have given us everything from antibiotics to electronic imaging to robotic surgical techniques.  Without them we wouldn’t have early detection, prevention and new and better treatments to improve our quality of life and lengthen our lifespan.  Let’s look at a few technological breakthroughs in the medical field.

•    Anesthesia
Can you imagine going under the knife today without some sort of anesthesia or pain killer?  The idea first came about in 1846 when a dentist in Boston used ether to end the pain of much needed operations.

•    Vaccines
Vaccines have helped stop the spread of disease and in some cases eradicate it completely.  The first was Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccine in 1796.

•    Medical Imaging

With the use of x-rays, CT scans, MRI’s and used patient monitors in hostpitals we are more than ever before able to locate disease and treat it faster.

•    Surgeries
You might eat well and exercise as much as you’re suppose to but when it comes to major trauma’s and life threatening disease, you’re going to be thankful of all the advances in surgical technologies.  With the help of medical imaging doctors are able to precisely locate the disease or trauma and remove it or fix it to get you back on your feet.

•    Prosthetics
The technological advances in prosthetics are mind boggling.  More and more people with a need for a prosthetic limb are able to get a device that looks and acts like a real one.  They give people their freedom and confidence back and allow them to continue leading a normal life.

•    Discovery of DNA Structure
DNA is the structure of molecules that carry genetic information from one generation to the next.  Genetic codes can give doctors the insight to predicting what disease your genes may be carrying.  Breaking down your DNA and being prepared for diseases that may be linked to you and your family will give you the head start on prevention.
These are just a few technological advances in the medical field and there are certainly more to come.
