Within the pages of the charak samhita we discover a rasayan mentioned of a very important herb. To those who do not know, a Rasayan is something which promotes long life and prevents aging. I would like to bring your attention to one such herb used extensively in the making of ayurvedic products known as Amalaki. According to many of the medical doctors the use of this fruit will permit a person to live for a hundred years with the vitality normally associated with youth. Amla has been promoted as having the ability to promote rejuvenation in many of the body's vital systems, provide added strength and promote a general feeling of wellness. It readily prevents many of our common diseases by boosting our personal immune system.

Scientifically known by the name of Emblica Officinalis the term amlaki in derived from the Sanskrit language. This fruit is known to be the richest source of Vitamin C in nature. According to the ayurvedic medicine literature Amla fruits possess five from a total of six rasa lacking only lavan rasa. It contains sheet virya or cold potency, guru or heavy and ruksh or dry. These properties allow it to work the best on the pitta disorders but have been known to help suppress all the three doshas.

The amalaki berry comes from a medium tall amalaki tree approximately 20 to 25 feet high. It contains yellow colored flowers which blossom between the months of February to May. The fruit itself is greenish yellow and is usually available from October and finishes up in April. The plant portion used for consumption is the amalaki fruit.

Due in part for its known sheet virya potency you will find this wonderful herb being used to combat diseases created by various pitta disorders. Amla has earned a high status in the many ayurvedic medicine preparations. Being high in Vitamin C content it is readily used to fight diseases such as scurvy.

Due to the presence of the five rasa it is helpful in decreasing ones appetite, acidity, indigestion, constipation, flatulence, gastric troubles, promotes salivation, strengthens the teeth and improves the liver function. Excellent results have been documented in its use against gastric ulcers and piles.

Amlaki benefits the circulatory system and promotes healthier heart functioning. It controls the toxin level of the body by increasing the blood circulation, reduces plaque formation within the arteries, and lowers blood sugar level as well as cholesterol level. Lastly it builds up the red blood cells.

One's respiratory system also can benefit from this fruit. It is useful in expelling sputum from ones respiratory tract; it fights tuberculosis, chronic coughing as well as allergic and childhood asthma.

It is extremely beneficial in building up nerve cells which tend to provide support for paralytic conditions. It promotes the brains ability to understand things easier, increases the sensitivity of our various sense organs, hones our reflexes, it tends to instill a sense of calmness within one's mind and suppresses any stress or mental tensions.

Regular use of the Amla fruit provides a radiant glow on the skin and delays the onset of wrinkles as well as loosening of the skin. It is exceptionally effective in cases of eczema.

When used as a local application it is beneficial in prevention of hair loss. When rubbed on the scalp it stimulates the hair follicles and promoting thick healthy hair growth. It will prevent premature graying of ones hairs and lessens dandruff. Many Indian women use Amla as a natural hair conditioner when washing their hair.

For those people suffering from arthritic conditions it will readily act as an anti-inflammatory agent quickly and effectively suppressing swelling and its associated pain.

In some cases it has been reported that the fruit has improved individuals' eyesight. It eliminates the watering and itching often found in tired eyes. Very good results have been documented on its use against cataracts.

It functions greatly as an anti-aging agent and improving ones general health while improving our immune system increasing our chances of fighting off diseases.
