The Clever Caveman – Eat to Fuel your Lifestyle

It is no small secret that America has a problem with weight gain. Weight loss is a billion dollar industry in America and probably holds the record for fad diets. In other cultures, the word “diet” is non-existent. We have all heard about the latest and greatest fad diets like the Atkins and South Beach diets about cutting carbs, or the detox diets, or hot pepper water diets, or meal replacement shakes and so on, and so on.

Common sense tells us that if we indulge in these temporary fad diets, our success will also be temporary. Therefore, we must evaluate our habits and lifestyle in order to make permanent changes.

Are there carbohydrates that are healthier than others? Yes. However, the caveman survived on a meat and potatoes diet in addition to whatever fruits, nuts and vegetables could be found at that time of year. Cavemen ate to fuel their lifestyle and to provide energy to keep moving and hunting and gathering. They did not make eating their lifestyle, as so many of us do now. They did not have a “lunch hour”. They simply ate when (epiphany) they were hungry. Makes sense doesn’t it?

Not only do we move less than our cavemen ancestors, thanks to inventions in transportation and the wonderful surplus of desk jobs, but we eat more. How many people make plans that don’t involve a movie or a restaurant? Probably not many. So few of us would skip the movies and stuffing our face to engage in healthy alternatives such as going for a bike ride, or venturing out to gather socially. Returning back to the common sense calculator, we move less and eat more...you do the math.

The body is a very efficient machine. If you listen to it, it will tell you when you are hungry, when you are thirsty, and when you need rest. Take a tip from the caveman. Eat to fuel your lifestyle so that you can make changes that are permanent, not temporary. Tweak your diet so that it works for your body and your lifestyle. Since no one body and no one lifestyle is the same, there is no one simple diet that is a quick fix to lose weight. Think like the caveman. Eat when you are hungry and feed your body what it needs, when it needs it.
