Spider veins are unattractive clusters of tiny red and blue veins that appear close to the surface of the skin. Forming a tangential web, spider veins typically show up on the legs and feet, sometimes even on the face. The presence of spider veins can be an embarrassment when to wearing skirts, shorts or lying on the beach. Luckily, cosmetic surgery can help. Learn the latest treatments for spider veins.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins can affect men and women of all ages, though they tend to be prominent among women. Hormones, age and genetics can also be responsible for spider veins. Overweight individuals are more susceptible.

Venous diseases and poor blood circulation are common causes for spider veins. Sometimes, varicose veins accompany spider veins. Varicose veins are large, blue cord-like structures that raise the surface of the skin. They can be somewhat painful and are no longer a functional part of the body. If you have varicose and spider veins, then you need to have the varicose veins treated first.

Treatment for Spider Veins: Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a cosmetic procedure characterized by a series of tiny injections. A sclerosing solution is injected into the skin-affected area. The spider veins swell, collapse and disappear from the surface of the skin. This treatment requires no anesthesia and takes less than an hour.

Who is a Good Candidate for Sclerotherapy Treatment?

Before you can receive sclerotherapy, the doctor will examine the condition of the legs, using an ultrasound device to determine whether the spider veins are indicative of a more serious heath problem. Notify the doctor of any medications or health conditions that may compromise a successful treatment. Individuals with illnesses that affect the blood, such as AIDS and hepatitis may not be able to receive treatment. People with diabetes, heart and circulatory problems may also be disqualified from sclerotherapy.

Risks of Sclerotherapy for Treating Spider Veins

Risks do exist, although there are few. Potential complications are blood clotting in the deeper veins, inflammation and allergic reaction to the sclerosing agent. The treatment can also cause skin discoloration, which should eventually subside.

What Can I Expect After Sclerotherapy Treatment for Spider Veins?

During the first few days following treatment, you will need to wear compression hose to ensure proper healing. The treated skin may be irritated and bruised. Slight pain is also a normal side effect.

Recovery is a breeze. However, be prepared for successive treatments until the full results of sclerotherapy can be achieved. Sclerotherapy requires between two and six treatments. Avoid strenuous activity between sessions, like jogging and lifting weights.

Cosmetic Laser Treatment for Spider Veins

Laser treatment is a versatile phenomenon in the world of cosmetic surgery. Most people are already aware of the wonders of laser hair removal. However, few have heard about its many other uses.

Cosmetic lasers are now an effective treatment for spider veins. The light from the laser makes the veins congeal and fall away from the surface of the skin. Laser treatment is suitable for smaller spider veins, particularly on the face. Endovenous laser treatment may be available for larger veins.

What are the Results of Laser Treatment for Spider Veins?

Like sclerotherapy, laser treatment for spider veins requires no anesthesia. A few sessions are necessary for full treatment. Laser treatment for spider veins is really safe. Minor bruising may occur, but should vanish in a week. Possible side effects are skin burns from the heat of the laser and skin discoloration.

Cosmetic procedures for spider veins can make the skin appear more attractive and healthy. However, not all veins can be corrected. In addition, no treatment is available as a permanent fix. New spider veins may reappear, requiring follow up care.
